Caving in Yorkshire

Caving in the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is lucky to home a number of fascinating caves and potholes. Due to this, the national park has become a very popular destination for many experienced cavers, who return time and again to explore further into the complex cave systems that have developed over hundreds and thousands of year.

Luckily for us novices, it isn’t just the experienced that get to explore the underground as there are a number of caving centres and experts in the area that will guide you through the underground systems, instructing you and supplying you with all the equipment that you need. There are also a number of large show caves, which allow those with less mobility or with young children to explore in a safe and guided environment.

Visit a show cave in the Yorkshire Dales National Park

Ingleborough Cave, Ingleborough - The Ingleborough cave was formed by the overflowing streams of Gaping Gill. Today it is safe to be explored by  visitors accompanied by a guide who can enlighten you on this natural wonder, along a half kilometre illuminated path filled with some of the country’s best calcite flows, the stalactites and stalagmites.

Famous potholes and caves in the Yorkshire Dales National Park

Gaping Gill, Ingleborough - Gaping Gill is one of the UK’s most complex cave systems with nineteen entrances, England’s largest unbroken waterfall and one of the largest underground caverns.

Alun Pot, Selside, near Horton in Ribblesdale – Alun Pot is one of the Yorkshire Dales most popular cave systems, linked to upper and lower Churn caves and the long Churn Spring. However, despite its popularity it is renowned for being particularly dangerous during and after times of heavy rainfall.

REMEMBER, potholes and caves are dangerous places, you should only attempt a descent if you are accompanied by an expert and with the correct equipment, do not attempt a descent or exploration alone. If you do enter a pothole or cave make sure someone knows where you are going and let them know of your safe return.
