Pubs in Swaledale

The Black Bull, Reeth

Receive a warm Yorkshire welcome at one of Reeth’s most popular pubs and one of, if not the oldest Inns in Reeth, The Black Bull. The Black Bull has a central location, right on Reeth’s picturesque village green, making it one of the village hot spots for both tourists and many locals.

The Black Bull gets particularly busy of an evening as features some cask ale favourites on the bar from the local brewery’s, Black Sheep and Theakstons. There are also a number of lagers, wines and spirits to choose from.

You can eat a hearty Yorkshire meal at a very reasonably price, main meals are priced around £8.00 - £9.00 and in our opinion very tasty!

Tan Hill Inn, Tan Hill

Tan Hill sits on both the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast walks and is famous for being Britain’s highest Inn, and featuring on the 2010 BBC News when those celebrating the New Year were snowed in for nearly a week.

It is probably one of the most remote pubs that you shall come across, but charmingly offers you a very warm welcome every time! Tan Hill has a number of quirky features, a traditional Yorkshire menu and a roaring fire – which those taking part in the Pennine Way or the Coast to Coast are often very grateful for and is loved by the regulars and other guests.

The Punch Bowl, Low Row

The Punch Bowl, Low Row, Yorkshire Dales

The Punch Bowl is a fantastic country pub with fantastic views across Swaledale. The Punch Bowl is what you would expect from a traditional Yorkshire pub, the exterior is unfussy, with a lovely light and airy feel inside, and it has recently been refurbished to a very tasteful and high standard. There is a beer garden at the front with panoramic views which is perfect, and very popular for those passing by on bike or foot!

The Punch Bowl is in our experience more of a restaurant, renowned for its excellence in food opposed to your typical boozer. Like we say the food is very nice but you would tend to pay a little bit more than other pubs in the area, but is very worth it.

Opening Times

  • Lunch: 12pm – 2
  • Dinner: 6pm – 9pm

The Bridge Inn is well known in the area for its delicious home cooked food. Every time we have eaten here we have enjoyed a very fresh meal, fantastic service and at great value too.

What’s great about The Bridge Inn is that it welcomes dogs and muddy boots!

The Kings Head, Gunnerside

The Kings Head is a fantastic Yorkshire pub located in the centre of Gunnerside at the foot of Gunnerside Ghyll. The staff at the Kings Head are amongst some of the friendliest bar staff in the area, very welcoming and provide very good service.

The Kings Head is renowned for their dog menu, the current landlady, Paula, introduced the dog menu not so long ago and has proved a hit as dogs are spoilt rotten with a choice of dog beer and treats.

The pub is popular with both the locals in Gunnerside and in surrounding area as well as the many tourists that come to Swaledale. They offer a good selection of local ales at the bar, including ales from the Black Sheep Brewery, the Copper Dragon Brewery and from Roosters Brewing Co.
