Location

Richmond

Richmond was founded by the Normans in 1071, and is overflowing with history, mostly centred around one of the finest tourist attractions in North Yorkshire – Richmond Castle. The castle, finished in 1086, is one of the greatest Norman fortresses in the UK and well worth a visit, not only to hear the history of the unruly North but to see the stunning views of the Dales from the castle keep and the tranquil Cockpit garden. ...

Reeth

The history of Reeth dates way back to the 18th Century, where it used to be the capital of the lead mining industry and a local centre for hand knitting, with a population of 1,460. However, the area has evolved into the centre of the beautiful farming community that we see today. At the heart of Reeth is a triangular green, surrounded by the local community, pubs, teas rooms, restaurant and gift shops. Beyond the immediate surrounds the village is overlooked by the stunning fells of Fremington Edge and Calver Hill which we can guarantee will provide a stunning backdrop to your visit. ...

Very cosy, clean and comfortable stay here with my husband and two children. We had a great 3 days in The Dales and this accommodation really added to the enjoyment of that stay.

  2. Timothy

We loved our stay here and only wish we could have stayed another week. Beautiful walks from the front door and convenient location to Richmond, shops and other attractions, yet away from it all.

  3. Paul

    Comfortable and conveniently warm cottage.

We had a great time in Appletree cottage, with its authentic but up to date interior and its beautiful surroundings. Owner Naomi responded very promptly to our queries.

  8. Alice

Really lovely short stay in the most beautiful part of Yorkshire . Country walks straight from the door , easy access ( by car ) to lots of towns / pubs / walks and the lovely town of Richmond .
Cottage has everything you need , really comfortable light and airy .
Naomi is a super helpful host .
I’d really recommend Apple tree cottage and would love to return

  9. Joan

Quaint, homely cottage, old world charm but with modern conveniences and everything you could need for your stay, clean and with lots of information to your fingertips. Naomi, the owner, just at the end of the phone should there be any problems , very helpful and obliging. If you want peace and quiet in idyllic surroundings this is the place for you. The only negative, should you want to make it one, is the short track leading to the cottages which is very challenging for a car, lots of potholes…….however we loved our stay!!

  10. Matthew

Great location for Swaledale and close to Richmond for supplies. Quiet and well stocked. We had a perfect break.

  11. Paul

Comfortable cottage in a very picturesque setting. Ideal for walkers and for people wanting to tour local towns and villages such as Richmond, Reeth, Hawes and Wensleydale creamery.

  12. Alan

A very quiet location with all the facilities you would need for a 2 weeks holiday. Very clean & comfortable cottage. Although we did not meet the owners communication was excellent. There are some enjoyable walks from the door, long or as short as you want, with plenty of information in the cottage.
We had a lovely holiday here and would recommend this to others.
As for mobile phone coverage O2 was good but BT no signal. Internet access was brilliant. We would certainly consider this for another time.

  13. Adrian

This cottage had everything we could want and made a great base for walks in the area and day trips further afield. The owners are very helpful and will reply quickly to questions.
We recommend this to anyone wanting to visit this part of the world.

  14. Charlie

We had a great a time at the cottage. As others have said it really felt like a home from home. A great base from which to explore the area. Communication with Naomi was great, the cottage was equipped with all you could wish for. Comfortable and cosy, this was our favourite stop on our tour of northern England. Thanks for a great stay! Highly recommended!

  15. Phillippa

Cottage furnished and equipped with everything you need, very comfortable and cosy with log burning fire, crisp cotton sheets and homely touches made for a relaxing break in the Yorkshire Dales. Walks straight from the front door, beautiful countryside.
It’s well worth having a supply of bird food as watching the huge variety of garden birds from the front room was a delight.

  16. Kate

We had such a lovely stay at Apple Tree cottage. We stayed for a long weekend in February with our two small children. The kids enjoyed spotting wildlife from our dining room and front room window and exploring the gorgeous woods just on the doorstep. The cottage has everything you need and we loved the wood burner. Everything was clean and fresh and the beds very comfortable with good quality bedding and linen. Perfect for a family get away with the possibility to go walking and visit near by sights. We will most likely return and can’t wait to see it all green in the summer!

  17. Anita

We had such a lovely break here – the snowdrops were breathtaking, the birds did not stop visiting, we also had rabbits and a pheasant. The cottage is a delight with everything you could need, wifi is perfect, with not a single issue. It really is a home from home and the owners provide you with everything you could possibly need – a real home from home. We will definitely be back and my son is already talking about our next visit.

  18. Michael

The cottage is tucked away in a very quiet location with just a few other building at the end of a farm track across a field. It is very cosy and well equipped with everything of a good quality. The owner has added some nice touches with a description of a number of walks right from the door of the cottage. We visited for the October half term holiday and the wood burning stove made the evenings very cosy also the dark skies down the lane made for a lovely little ritual stroll in the dark evenings to look at the stars and listen for owls and other wildlife which our 10 year old daughter loved! I also particularly liked sitting in the little conservatory dining area at the front of the cottage looking over at the hills.
Although tucked away and very rural it’s only 6 miles from the market towns of Richmond or Leyburn for provisions.
This was the first time I had visited the Yorkshire Dales since I was a child and the first time my family had ever visited. I had forgotten how lovely the area was and definitely hope to go back soon.
Warning if you are addicted to your internet though, there is no mobile signal on either Vodafone or EE (although there is a landline for emergencies) and the broadband is a bit on the slow side.
All in all a very comfortable cosy cottage in a lovely location.

  19. Stephen

Appletree Cottage is a lovely place to stay for a week to enjoy the quiet Dales. We were 4 adults and the cottage suited us perfectly. Everything was as described and all the facilities are modern and comfortable.

  20. Alec

This was an excellent cottage, in a lovely quiet spot. It was well furnished, very well equipped and extremely comfortable. I would strongly recommend it, and the helpful and generous owner.
I think I’ll be coming back next year.

  21. Kay

A lovely cottage in a truly peaceful and unspoilt location as the description stated. Great for walks in the Yorkshire Dales with several from the cottage – and there is lots of information about them in the house. Well equipped and nicely furnished – just a few minor things weren’t as top notch as we had hoped but we have told the owner about these directly. Well worth going to!

  22. Isobel

We stayed here for 5 days and had a good time. The cottage has everything that you need and more besides, although the wifi only worked for some of the time. We explored the area on bikes and had some excellent trips.

We have been for a fourthnight in the appletree cottage, make lovely walks true the dales, peaceful and quiet neighbourhood. We loved it very much. Naomi and Stephen have made the cottage too a very nice place to stay. We can recommend the appletree cottage for walkers and the quietness. Matthieu and Marian

  25. Elizabeth

We stayed for a week at Easter. There were 4 of us – my teenage daughter & stepdaughter didn’t realise there were only 2 double beds but I found a fold-up bed in the cupboard downstairs, so they were happy! They had the master bedroom, which had more room.
The cottage is very warm and cosy, and we lit the fire in the evenings.
The beds were very comfy, and the kitchen well-equipped.
    Highly recommended!!!

  26. Neil

Beautiful old cottage in an idyllic setting among a small hamlet of similar around a little green with views over the dales. Accessed along a track through a field of lambs, it may be a bit quiet or too secluded for some as the adjacent village doesn’t have a pub or shop but if it’s peace and quiet you’re after this is the place. And there are also great walks from the cottage (fab walking guide inside) including 6 mils to nearby lovely Richmond (Taxi back!) Everything is provided for a cosy comfortable stay, including some great books on the history of the location and lovely Swaledale. All in all a fantastic holiday, would definitely recommend.

  27. Michelle

Perfect for long or short break….owner very helpful could not fault ..will be back soon

  28. Ian

Appletree cottage was an absolute treat to spend a week in. It was warm, cosy and incredibly peaceful. The kitchen had the latest appliances and the rest of the cottage was well maintained and comfortable- It was nice to have Naomi’s personal touches,ie. books, paintings etc for us to enjoy. The local pub at Dunholme served good pub food and they were very friendly. Plenty of superb walks in the area and York is just over an hour away. We would definitely recommend this cottage to family and friends. Thank you Naomi and Stephen from Di and Ian from Shrewsbury.
