Accommodation Description

Intake Cottage is a traditional 17th century Yorkshire Dales Holiday Cottage, which sits in an elevated, peaceful position between the villages of Low Row and Gunnerside, in Swaledale, surrounded by sensational views of the Swale Valley within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Intake Cottage was part of the original farmhouse but has since been converted into a charming dales holiday cottage. Over the years the owners have taken great care in refurbishing and maintaining their delightful holiday home. The refurbishments include a modern bathroom and a traditional shaker style kitchen which features a dishwasher and fridge freezer.

As you arrive at the holiday cottage there is off road parking for one car. The entrance to Intake Cottage is through a large secure gate which takes you into the good sized and well maintained country garden. The garden is south facing and enjoys stunning, uninterrupted views across the local farmland, the River Swale, and the fells and dales beyond. This is an ideal location to enjoy dining alfresco during the warmer summer months, especially when the famous Swaledale wild flower meadows are at their most striking. What’s more, the garden also features a beautiful summer house. The summer house can be enjoyed all year round, and provides the perfect shelter on a blustery day. It’s in a great spot to soak up the natural environment, watch the surrounding wildlife or simply offers you seclusion to read and relax.

The cottage entrance takes you straight into the cosy living/dining room which comfortably seats up to four people, with fantastic views from the south facing front. The living room also boasts a very grand, cast iron open fireplace, which exudes warmth and adds to the cosy atmosphere. The decor is traditional, with beamed ceilings and the original stone flagged floor.

To the left of the living/dining room there is the Kitchen. The kitchen is large and greatly resembles the traditional farmhouse style, with a Belfast sink in front of the window, plenty of work space and storage on traditional stone pantry shelves. You shall find the Kitchen fully equipped with all you should need for your stay and more.

To the rear of the living room is a staircase which leads up to the sleeping accommodation. Immediately at the top of the stairs is the double bedroom. The double bedroom is spacious and has wonderful views from the large sash window across the Swale Valley. To the right of the room there is a door which leads to the single bedroom with stowaway bed, which also has a large sash window with fantastic views to the front of the holiday cottage.

Intake Cottage is in an ideal location to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park. From the doorstep local walks and bike routes can be accessed. The local pub, The Punch Bowl is situated approximately fifteen minutes’ walk from Intake Cottage. The Punch Bowl has been refurbished within the last few years and is renowned for its cuisine all year round should you wish for a night off cooking.

To ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible all kitchen linen, bed linen and towels are provided. The electric is supplied and coal for the open fire is also included in the rental price.

There is also an additional annex that sleeps two people if further accommodation is required, please visit Swallows Byre for more information.

Location

Low Row

The Coast to Coast walk passes very close by the village but for those that are not so keen on such a challenge, there are many less strenuous walks in the area. For example, there is a beautiful walk that takes you nearly all the way to Grinton on the banks of the River Swale at the foot of the valley. Whilst you stroll along the river bank you can take in the stunning views of the rolling hills either side of you, which is stunning on a summers day! ...

Excellent location, hospitality and accommodation. Lots of great walks and pubs nearby.

  4. Peter

Lovely location, well equipped kitchen, very cosy. Lots of great cycling and walking from the cottage.

  5. James

We had a very enjoyable stay at Intake Cottage. Dorothy was very helpful and friendly. The Cottage is very cosy and the kitchen is well-equipped. There’s also a surprisingly effective coal fire for cold evenings. We had excellent weather for the whole week which meant we walked almost every day though we had planned to spend some time reading and relaxing in the cottage. We would definitely go again as one would never tire of the view.

  6. Annie

    Fantastic location

  7. Ian

Cottage is comfortable and cosy and the coal fire is lovely on an evening. You couldn’t ask for a nicer outlook as from the back garden you can sit in the sun and look out over the fields and the river swale. There are lots of walks that you can do directly from the cottage and many others are close at hand. We had a meal and an evening at the kings head in gunnerside which was tasty and all were very welcoming. We would highly recommend Intake cottage and certainly we will be visiting again

  8. Ed

A perfect Dales retreat. Spectacular views across the valley and a cosy little bolthole. Dorothy was a brilliant host and took the time to meet us and make sure we were settled in. Very comfortable bed and exceptionally quiet at night – so we both slept well.

  9. John

Dorothy’s cottage is in a great location with fantastic views over the valley. The property was very well equipped with everything we needed to make our stay comfortable; there was an open coal fire which we sat around in the evenings and watched TV. The cottage is a great location for walking, we did two walks, one from Muker to Keld via Kisdon and the other from Gunnerside up to the old lead mines. There are loads of places to eat out in local villages and there is The Punchbowl just down the road in Low Row. We had a delicious meal there on our first evening. Dorothy is a great host and was waiting for us when we arrived to show us around and give us loads of useful information. I am sure we will be back!

  10. Laura

What a lovely, cosy wee cottage! Stunning open fire, everything you could need in the kitchen and a very comfortable bed. The view is stunning and we really enjoyed taking it in with a cuppa in the garden! Dorothy is an excellent host, quick to answer some of my more random questions in the run up to check in. Low row itself is well situated for walking and taking in the various tourist attractions in the surrounding dales. It’s a lovely, pleasant walk to the pub in the village, which has a well deserved reputation for its food!

  11. Paula

Dorothy’s place is just gorgeous. A typical English country cottage and so cosy by the fire when the autumn wind was blowing. The view is beautiful, looking out over the garden and pasture to the sparkling Swale below. I had a lovely breakfast in the summer house too. Dorothy was very welcoming and friendly. Within an hour of being there I knew that I wouldn’t ever want to leave.

  12. Gill and Peter, Suffolk

Lovely cottage with everything you could possibly want or need. Fab views, comfortable bed, great fire. Tenth visit to the Dales, definitely not the last. Many thanks.

  13. Paul and Marie

We had a wonderful stay in your beautiful cottage. Idyllic views, fabulous walks, Lovely local produce and roaring fire. What more could you want? We’ll be back but next time for longer so that we can really enjoy all the area has to offer. A wonderful homely cottage. Perfect.

  14. Richard and Michelle, Lincoln

We’ve been really lucky with the weather, sunshine every morning, really unusual for November. Enjoyed the summerhouse in the daytime and the fire in the evening. Can highly recommend the Reeth to Grinton walk, nice easy scenic walk for this time of year. The Punch Bowl is excellent for an evening meal. Fireworks night at Reeth was a memorable occasion! We’ve had a very enjoyable few days, thank you for everything.

  15. Angela and Chris, York

We really enjoyed staying in your lovely cosy cottage. Fantastic open fire and wonderful views. One of the best cottages we’ve stayed in. Enjoyed the walk from Muker to Keld, then back along the corpse way. Beautiful scenery. We hope to return sometime soon.

  16. Andrew and Lisa Page, Workshop

Had an absolutely stunning week! the cottage is fabulous and totally spotless! The view is breath-taking and we eagerly hope to return wanting to test drive Swallow Byre next time! Enjoyed baking bread and making ox cheek casserole. Loved the fish and chip van calling on Friday at 7:30 beautiful fish and chips to eat on the patio watching the sun go down. So much more to say…but until next time thank you Dorothy and Nigel.

  17. Jason

This is a charming cottage located in scenic landscape with a river nearby and surrounded by mountains. You can walk to the nearby Punchbowl pub, and Reeth is a short drive away. The host will show you around the cottage but will then respect your privacy. All in all good value and a great place to begin walks from.
