Accomodation Description

School House is a Grade II listed building which dates back to the late 17th Century situated in the small and beautiful village of Gunnerside in Swaledale. Renovations have been carried out to a very high standard featuring oak wood work, exposed stonework and original beams and features. This mixed with quality furnishings and fabrics provide an extremely homely and comfortable feel.  It is now a fantastic, well-appointed, self-catering holiday cottage in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

This Swaledale holiday home easily sleeps ten guests across five bedrooms in addition welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs and boasts two bathrooms, a shower room and an en-suite. The large sash windows throughout the holiday home provide a spacious feeling. The windows to the rear are south facing with wonderful views across the stunning Gunnerside Meadows to the River Swale.

The cottage is heated throughout by oil central heating and has a wonderful social layout downstairs. There is a big country farmhouse kitchen complete with an oil Rayburn range, electric oven and hob and a long dining table to enjoy a hearty home cooked meal after an active day exploring the dale. Off to the rear of the kitchen is a large pantry where two fridges, a freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer are homed. There are also many shelves filled with quality pots, pans, baking equipment and as many cooking utensils you can name…a home cooks dream!

Leading off from the kitchen are the snug and the main lounge, each have a log burning stove, comfortable seating and a cosy ambiance. The perfect place to relax and huddle down to relive that day’s adventure, especially in the winter months. The snug has views to the rear of the cottage overlooking the south facing garden area which incidentally is a suntrap in summer months.

The first bedroom is located downstairs which has a single bed and a stowaway bed and there is a shower room next door, proving beneficial for those with mobility difficulties. Upstairs is four more bedrooms, bedroom two is a standard double with an en-suite shower room. Bedroom three and four share the main house bathroom with a standalone shower and a beautiful free standing bath to soak away the aches after a long walk up the Ghyll! Both these bedrooms have zip and link beds so the beds can either be made up as a king/twin or super king/twin ).  The master bedroom is above the kitchen with a king size sleigh bed and has an en-suite bathroom with a shower over the corner bath.

Outside is a cobbled area under the kitchen window and up two little steps is the enclosed grassed garden area with a small patio and garden furniture – a lovely spot to take in the views of the meadows or dine alfresco using the Weber BBQ. There is also allocated parking for two cars, further parking can be found on a first come, first served basis in the village.

The area is packed with landmarks such as the remains of the lead mines and straight from the door you can enjoy many great walks and bike rides such as;  a hike up Gunnerside Ghyll, a section of the coast to coast or a gentle meander along the River Swale. You can also access the Swale Trail from Gunnerside, taking you either to Keld or Reeth, this is a new unsurfaced path for families who would like to ride bikes together, but is also great for those wanting to walk a flatter route or perhaps have a buggy.

In the village you will find two fantastic eateries. The Kings Head serves really good pub food for lunch and dinner and of course Yorkshire’s famous Black Sheep. A roaring fire and warm welcome await you. Ghyll foot tea rooms and bistro serves lunches and teas all day, dinners 2 evenings a week and a cracking Sunday lunch, followed by Bobs famous desserts.

3 miles west you will find the beautiful village of Muker, with the Farmers Arms, tea rooms, village shop, art gallery and Swaledale Woollens, for all your winter woollies. Whilst nearby Reeth offers a host of pubs, shops, cafes, galleries and a post office.

To ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible all bed linen and towels are provided and electric and oil is included in the rental price.

Fantastic holiday property! We were a party of 4 adults, 5 teens and a dog. Great location with spectacular walks on your doorstep. House was spotlessly clean and we really appreciated the welcome gifts… a small thing but milk in the fridge when you arrive late at night!! Beds really comfortable and showers amazing. Thanks Amy for such a warm welcome and a great property.

A group of 8 adults, a baby and 2 dogs had a fantastic stay at School House. The house was everything we wanted it to be, and we really enjoyed exploring the nearby villages, heading out on long walks and recovering in the pub afterwards.
Thank you, we’d love to come back!

Where do I begin! Can’t believe how much thought has gone in to making this such a superb holiday home. From the lovely comfortable beds to every type of oven tin, this has been very well thought out and we enjoyed all the experience. We already knew the area but had forgotten just the sheer scale of the beautiful scenery lovely walks and friendly local pub.
    PERFECT !

Our group of 10 walkers stayed here Friday 16th to Monday 19th June, 3 nights.
This is a great property which easily sleeps 10 in comfort and with good privacy. It is well equipped and decorated to a high standard while retaining the lovely character of the property. Bedding and towels were of a high quality and spotlessly clean as was the whole property.
Located in Gunnerside with a good pub (we had a post-walk drink their every day and ate there on the Saturday night) and a good cafe, it is ideal for exploring Swaledale.
Plenty of short and long walks from the doorstep with great pubs/cafes to rest-a-while if needed.
We intend to return to this one. Its that good!

We had a really relaxing time at School House and enjoyed meeting Amy, the owner, who went out of her way to make us welcome, from the card to welcome us, to the nice touch of a bottle of fizz, some biscuits and even a lovely vase of freesias in the window. The village was a great base to explore Swaledale on foot and we only used the car on a few occasions to travel further afield. The local pub is just down the road and the Sunday lunch at the Ghyllfoot café was voted the best. All in all a nice relaxing break for eight adults and two children and we look forward to a return visit.

We have just spent a fabulous week in School Cottage. It was everything we were hoping for.
The cottage is delightful and is equipped with everything that you could possibly need.
We loved the location, however you need to be prepared with your food etc as there is no village shop. This did not matter though as the local pub (Kings Head) served the most delicious fish and chips!!
Lots of places to visit by car and if you are keen walkers then this is paradise!!
    Definitely recommend.
