Accommodation Description

Nestled at Swaledale’s most northerly point, in the tiny hamlet of Keld, is The Manse – a Grade II, spacious, three bedroom holiday cottage in Swaledale. The Manse is in the heart of Keld, a picturesque hamlet with fantastic views of the surrounding dale and easy access to some spectacular walks and cycle routes straight from the cottage door.

As the name suggests, this dales holiday cottage was originally the Minister’s residence and as such neighbours the beautiful Keld Chapel. However, in recent years, since its renovation The Manse has become a very popular holiday cottage. The renovation included the installation of full oil fired central heating – both underfloor heating and radiators. There are also two open coal fires which makes The Manse very cosy and warm. Despite the restoration and addition of modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, Freeview and DVD player The Manse has retained much of the original features such as beamed ceilings, stone flagged floors, window seats and fireplaces which gives this holiday cottage the dales charm.

The holiday cottage is decorated to a high standard throughout and provides spacious accommodation for six people over two floors. The living accommodation on the ground floor consists of a generously proportioned reception room / dining area with open fire, a living room with a second open fire with original Victorian fire surround and two extremely comfortable, top quality sofas to relax on after a day exploring the dale. Both rooms have south facing windows facing up the village which is a great spot to view the comings and goings of rural village life.

The modern galley style kitchen is to the rear of the holiday cottage and is fully equipped with all you should require for the duration of your stay. There is also an additional prep kitchen / breakfast room overlooking the bottom of the village and Keld woods. At the front there is a small garden to enjoy a glass of wine of an evening as the sun goes down. The sleeping accommodation comprises of three good size bedrooms, one king size bed with pocket sprung mattress, one double and one twin bedroom with new mattresses and family bathroom with large shower. There is an additional cloakroom with toilet and basin which incidentally houses the central heating boiler which acts as an effective drying room for clothes should the weather catch you out.

The Manse also benefits from both a front and rear garden with flowers borders, patio areas and outdoor furniture. There is private parking for two cars and secure bike storage found adjacent to the cottage.

Keld is a fantastic base for those wishing to get away from it all and enjoy an idyllic rural retreat. There are some beautiful walks such as the scenic walk from Keld to Muker, with waterfalls and gills to explore enroute if you fancy a bit of a scramble. You are not too far from lead mine ruins that the area was renowned for once upon a time. What’s more Keld lies on the crossroad of two well known walks – the Coast to Coast and the Pennine Way.

Keld is a quiet, peaceful place but boasts a seasonal tearoom, a small hotel (Keld Lodge) with excellent restaurant and bar and a small information centre where you can pick up leaflets and find out more about the village and surrounding area both past and present.

The Manse is one of our dog friendly holiday cottages, two well behaved dogs welcome.

To ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible all kitchen linen, bed linen and towels are provided and the electricity and oil is included in the rental price.

Helen’s cottage is lovely – and even nicer than we were expecting from the photos . Tastefully decorated, surprisingly spacious, and we loved the underfloor heating and open fire. The living room is really comfy and a lovely place to cosy up when it’s cold outside.
