Knaresborough Castle
Knaresborough is well known for the ruins of the town castle. The ruins of the castle overlook the River Nidd and the forest of Knaresborough and are open to the public. You are able to freely wonder the castle grounds but if you wish to see the interior of the castle there is an entry fee to do so. There are often events in the castle grounds such as performing arts and bands during the summer.
Mother Shipton’s Cave
Mother Shipton is a legendary figure born as an illegitimate child in a cave in 1488, off of the River Nidd in Knaresbrough. Her legend grew from the dark prophecies that she told, some of which came true in her life time and shortly after her death.
Today the public can visit Mother Shipton’s Cave where she was supposedly born and the Petrifying Well. The petrifying well is one of England’s oldest tourist attractions and the only well of its kind in the England. Back in the time of Mother Shipton it was thought to be a magic well as the locals saw small items turn to stone. It is in more recent years that science has defined the truth behind the petrifying process.
The Great Knaresborough Bed Race
The Great Knaresborough Bed race has taken place every summer since 1966 and has grown to be one of the largest community events in Northern England with competitors known to have come from as far afield as Germany and America to take part.
There aren’t many events as ‘special’ as this which is why it attracts so much attention. Teams comprise of six runners and one passenger. Prior to the event the team will work hard to prepare the bed ready for the race, including decorating it to the theme of the year. On the day the team will race through the Knaresborough town pushing the bed with them and witnessed by around 25,000 spectators. We guarantee that you won’t see many things like this, so if you are in the area on the day of the race it worth checking it out.
