Long winding roads lead to beautiful places : )
Grinton
The Cathedral of the Dale
The village of Grinton has a beautiful church – St. Andrews. The church, built on the crossing point of the River Swale was constructed over 900 years ago and named after the missionary saint, Saint Andrew. Today St. Andrews Church is often used for concerts throughout the year but its busiest time is during the Swaledale Festival held every year during May.
The Corpse Way
Back in the day St. Andrews was one of the main churches in Upper Swaledale. People came from far and wide to worship here, but also to bury their loved ones. The mourners would carry the coffin along a 16 mile footpath from Keld, this footpath is known as the Corpse Way. This historic path is still well trodden today, and for those choosing this walk the Corpse Way is possible to still see the long flat rocks that were positioned at intervals to rest the wicker coffins.
The Bridge Inn
Bridge Inn dates back to the 13th century and is located opposite St. Andrews church. This former coach house offers a warm welcome, especially in the winter with its roaring fire and at Christmas amazing mulled wine is served!
This successful pub, is recommended in both the Good Pub and Good Beer guides, offering a full menu of homemade food, real ales and an impressive wine selection, which is popular with both tourists and the locals!
What’s more, it is one of the few pubs that welcome dogs and muddy boots! But be aware that if you get caught using your mobile you will be fined 50p which is donated to charity.
