Area Guide

Staithes is well known for formally being one of the main fishing villages on the Yorkshire Coast. However today there is only one fishing boat that is run by a local family with three generations at work. Today Staithes is far more of a holiday destination with around half the houses within the village being second homes or holiday homes. The local economy has learnt to rely more on tourism then its fishing roots. Staithes is situated on the Yorkshire Coast within the North York Moors National Park, roughly 10 miles north of Whitby. 

The Boulby Mine

The Boulby Mine is located just outside Staithes and is the deepest mine of any kind in Europe. Its underground road network is extensive and stretches under the North Sea and totals 1,000 Kilometres. The mine produces around half of the UKs Potash and as a by-product it also produces rock salt.

Captain Cook

Captain Cook also resided in Staithes for a short while before he was a captain at the time he was known only as James Cook. He worked in a grocer’s apprentice before moving to Whitby to train as a seaman and later a Royal Navy Sailor.

Staithes Art Group

Staithes is home to around 20 – 30 artists that has formed a group known as the Staithes group. They have been known to hold pop up art exhibitions in their houses throughout the village.
