Area Guide

Long winding roads lead to beautiful places : )

Horton-in-Ribblesdale

Horton-in-Ribblesdale is situated in the Yorkshire National Park close to the River Ribble. It has a population little over 500, but has been known to double over a weekend when tourists descend to the area for the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks that start and finish in the village. It is also a well know resting point for those walking the Peninne Way or other routes such as the Ribble Way and Dales highway.

Yorkshire Three Peaks

The famous Yorkshire Three Peaks is 26 mile circular walk/challenge, that like the name suggests takes you up three of the local peaks that are part of the Pennine range near to the River Ribble; Pen-y-gent (691 metres), Whernside (728 metres) and Ingleborough (723 metres).

Most people tackling the peaks in the order listed above. We would highly recommend starting this early doors for a couple of reasons. Firstly the walk is very popular, so the earlier you start, the less busy the route will be leaving you to enjoy the scenery that bit more. Secondly it is a long 26 miles walk and the average time taken is around 10 hours, so if you want to squeeze in a celebratory pint at either the Golden Lion or the Crown Hotel at the end of the trek, you need to allow plenty of time!

The Yorkshire Three Peaks are extremely popular, especially at weekends, so it may be tricky to find a spot to park as parking in the area is limited. There is one National Park car park in Main Street close by the grey bridge. In addition some residents/landowners occasionally make additional parking, so look out for signs telling you which fields are open for visitor parking.

Remember to always play safe, mountains are very dangerous places. Before you set off please sign in at the Pen-y-Ghent Café and remember to sign out when you arrive back so that we know you are not stuck up the mountain.

Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross Race

The Yorkshire Three Peaks route is used once a year in September for the Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross Race. The three peaks Cyclo-Cross race is the toughest cyclo-cross race in the UK at present and also the most popular. The route is a little longer than the walking route totalling 38 miles starting from Helwith Bridge. 34 miles of the course is rideable (20 cross country and 18 road). The remaining 4 miles is 5000 feet of climbing (with your bike on your shoulder!). Even if you’re not up for taking part it is definitely worth a visit to witness these crazy souls in action.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale Amenities

Horton-in-Ribblesdale has two traditional Yorkshire pubs; The Crown Hotel and The Golden Lion. There is a village store, which is limited so recommend stocking up from a larger store if possible. There is also a café and tea room for welcomed refreshments if you are taking part in any strenuous activities.
