Tucked away in the rolling hills of Wensleydale, Aysgarth Falls is a spectacular destination where thundering waterfalls, woodland trails, and family-friendly paths come together for the perfect day out. Whether you’re holidaying in one of our cosy Yorkshire Dales cottages or just passing through, this famous beauty spot offers something for everyone—adventurers, families with children, dog owners, photographers, and nature lovers alike. From scenic riverside rambles to picnic-perfect viewpoints and dog-friendly cafés, it’s no wonder this iconic location was chosen as the backdrop for a memorable scene in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Why Visit Aysgarth Falls in the Yorkshire Dales?

Aysgarth Falls is one of the most iconic and visited waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Set along the River Ure, this spectacular natural attraction is made up of three stepped waterfalls—Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls—each offering stunning views and photo-worthy moments year-round. The sound of the water rushing over the limestone shelves is instantly calming, and the surrounding countryside is equally breathtaking.

It’s a location steeped in cinematic fame too—film buffs may recognise the setting from the 1991 classic Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner. The falls featured in the legendary sword-fight scene between Robin Hood and Little John.

Aysgarth Falls Walks for Families and Dogs

One of the things we love most about Aysgarth Falls is how wonderfully accessible and family-friendly it is. The paths connecting the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls are well-maintained and mostly level, making them ideal for families with young children, grandparents, or anyone wanting a leisurely walk without too much effort. The route winds through pretty woodland and opens up to scenic viewpoints where you can pause, take photos, or simply soak up the beauty of the river.

Children will love the sense of adventure here—there are shallow river edges to paddle in and peaceful trails where they can run ahead safely. Classic games like skimming stones, “pooh sticks” or “know the rock” are a must. Bring binoculars and a bug pot too—this is a fantastic place to spot butterflies, woodland birds, and farm animals like sheep and cows in the surrounding fields.

Dog-Friendly Facilities and Family Fun at Aysgarth Falls

Bringing your dog? Great! Aysgarth Falls is dog-friendly, with plenty of shaded woodland paths and river access at the upper falls for a quick paddle. Just remember to keep them on leads near livestock and busier areas.

There’s a lovely circular walk that loops around the falls and nearby woodland, taking in all three waterfalls with plenty of stopping points along the way. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can extend your walk to nearby Freeholders’ Wood, part of an ancient woodland conservation area managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

For longer hikes, you can also explore routes to Castle Bolton or even head across to Cauldron Falls at West Burton, a hidden gem in a nearby village.
