If you’re considering entering the Swaledale Marathon, stop hesitating and go for it. Whether you’re a keen fell runner, a hill walker, or just looking for a challenge that rewards you with stunning views and incredible local spirit, this event is an unforgettable way to experience Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

We ran the Swaledale Marathon this year, and it was one of the most exhilarating — and exhausting — days we’ve ever had in the Dales. Here’s everything you need to know, plus why it’s the perfect excuse to plan a walking holiday or running adventure in this beautiful part of North Yorkshire.

What Is the Swaledale Marathon?

Despite the name, the Swaledale Marathon isn’t your standard 26.2-mile road race. This is a 23.2-mile fell marathon, starting and finishing in the village of Reeth, and taking in some of the most spectacular — and rugged — landscapes in the northern Dales.

Organised annually by the Swaledale Outdoor Club, the event attracts around 500 runners and walkers from across the UK, all ready to test themselves on moorland trails, rocky climbs, and remote valleys.

This isn’t just a race — it’s a full-on experience.

Swaledale Marathon Route Highlights

The route winds through some of Swaledale’s most iconic scenery, including:

  • Fremington Edge – a challenging early climb with breathtaking views
  • Langthwaite and Gunnerside – classic Dales villages along the way
  • Great Pinseat – high moorland with a remote, wild feel
  • Surrender Bridge and Old Gang Smelt Mill – rich in lead mining history
  • Punchard Gill – a long climb late in the race that tests your grit

The mix of terrain is part of what makes the Swaledale Marathon so unique. You’ll run (or walk) through open fells, quiet tracks, river paths, and winding lanes. The route is waymarked and well supported, with friendly volunteers at checkpoints offering water, biscuits, bananas — and welcome encouragement!

What It’s Like to Take Part

The Swaledale Marathon isn’t just a physical challenge — it’s an emotional one too. For me, the highs and lows were intense: one minute you’re coasting downhill, feeling amazing, and the next you’re pushing yourself up a steep ascent, questioning your life choices!

What got me through was the atmosphere. From the cheerful marshals to the camaraderie with fellow participants, there’s a real sense of community. It’s one of those rare events where everyone is genuinely rooting for each other.

Even if you’re not a regular runner, walkers are warmly welcomed, and many entrants complete the route at a steady pace, soaking in the scenery and making a full day of it.

Planning Your Trip to Swaledale for the Marathon

The Swaledale Marathon is held each year in early June, and entries usually open several months in advance. It’s wise to sign up early, as places fill quickly.

If you’re travelling from outside the area, it’s a brilliant opportunity to book a longer stay and explore everything Swaledale has to offer. The area is packed with:

  • Stunning walks of all lengths and difficulties
  • Traditional pubs and local cafes
  • Historic sites like Bolton Castle, Muker, and lead mining remains
  • Wildflower meadows, particularly vibrant in late spring and early summer
