Scarborough Castle

Scarborough Castle is without a doubt one of Yorkshire’s finest English Heritage attractions and a great place to spend an afternoon.

Scarborough Castle is situated up a steep hill on the stunning Yorkshire coastline and can be viewed from almost everywhere in Scarborough. The steep trek to the top is well worth the effort as from the castle grounds there are wonderful views across the north and south bay.

History fans will Love Scarborough Castle as although the majority is ruins, some areas have been well preserved and restored. There is also an audio tour that is extremely informative, describing in detail the history of the castle and how it all began.

It is worth noting that due to the castle being so high it may be best choosing a less windy day to visit. If you go on a sunny day is a perfect place for a picnic, or alternatively there is also a café on site which is highly recommended and reasonably priced!

Helmsley Castle

The beautiful market town of Helmsley in the North York Moors is home to the historic, 900 year old Helmsley castle. Helmsley Castle is a well maintained English Heritage attraction and one we loved visiting, especially as we had a glorious sunny day which made the castle look splendid.

There are numerous information boards around the Castle, which present the history of it. However, there is also an audio tour available that describes in detail every aspect of the castle, which we thought was far better than the information boards.

It is a relaxing place to visit as it didn’t seem to be as busy as other castles we have visited, perhaps this was down to the location or the size of the castle ruins.

The staff at the visitor centre were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the site, and it is a great way to spend a couple of hours with the children!

Middleham Castle

Middleham Castle is a fascinating castle in the heart Wensleydale in the pretty village of Middleham. It was once home to Richard III when he was a child, but now it’s a hugely frequented tourist attraction much loved for the wealth of history held here.

The castle itself is small and like many castles the majority of Middleham Castle is ruins. However, the beautiful ruins have been exceptionally well preserved! You are still able to climb the magnificent tower with amazing views from the top! There are also a lot of signs around the castle grounds which have great descriptions of what the castle used to look like, enabling you to really picture the history of the place.

Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle is a great place to stop and explore no matter what your age! You can’t help but notice it sat high on the hill on route to Redmire with spectacular views. Part of the castle is a ruin which you are unable to get to. However, the owners have taken great care to restore the other section, which is now a fantastic historical site but there is so much more to this wonderful attraction, such as the owl, hawk and falconry show, archery, a bee hive and small but gorgeous gardens with a maze for the children to burn some energy.

Richmond Castle

Richmond Castle is only a short walk from Richmond town centre and well worth a visit with a very reasonably priced entry fee. The castle is in very good condition and is one of the very few castles where you are able to climb to the top of the tower. At the top you will be pleased with your efforts as the views across the town are stunning.
