As dog owners ourselves, we’ve roamed countless trails in Swaledale and beyond with our own four-legged companions trotting along happily beside us. Trust us – there’s nothing quite like seeing tails wag with joy as they bound over moorland, splash through streams, and sniff their way across the Dales. Every walk really is an adventure, and Swaledale is one of the most magical places to explore with your dog.

From sweeping fellside views to riverside rambles perfect for cooling off paws, there’s something here for every kind of canine explorer – and a welcoming, dog-friendly pub at the end of the trail makes it even better.

Here are five of our favourite dog-friendly walks in Swaledale – all tried, tested, and loved by our dogs.

 

1. Fremington Edge

1. Fremington Edge

This classic circular walk sets off from Reeth and climbs up onto Fremington Edge – a dramatic ridge with incredible views across the Swaledale valley. You can also extende the walk by continuing over Calver Hill and loop back down into the village.

You’ll pass through peaceful moorland, open skies, and plenty of interesting smells and sights to keep dogs busy. It’s ideal for energetic pups who love a proper leg stretch.

2. Great Pinseat from Surrender Bridge

2. Great Pinseat from Surrender Bridge

Looking for a wilder adventure? This remote circular walk begins at Surrender Bridge and climbs to the summit of Great Pinseat. It’s a rugged landscape with sweeping views and fascinating relics of the area’s lead mining history at the Old Gang Mine.

It’s a brilliant choice for experienced walkers and curious dogs who love open spaces and fewer crowds.

  • After your walk, unwind atThe Punch Bowl Inn in Low Row. With stunning views and a cosy bar where dogs are always welcome, it’s the perfect end to a proper fell hike.
3. Gunnerside Gill

3. Gunnerside Gill

This walk offers an exciting mix of terrain with riverside paths, industrial heritage, and beautiful scenery. Starting in Gunnerside, follow the gill through a dramatic valley full of old mining ruins, bubbling streams, and shady glades.

It’s a top choice for dogs who enjoy variety and a good paddle!

For something a little shorter but just as stunning, this circular walk from Keld climbs to the summit of Kisdon Hill before dropping down to the river. With fewer crowds and gorgeous views, it’s a hidden gem.

It’s also a great walk for hot weather – thanks to the shady paths and opportunities for dogs to cool off in the River Swale.

  • Want to make a longer loop? Head toThe Farmers Arms in Muker, a popular, dog-friendly community pub known for its hearty food and relaxed atmosphere.

5. Calver Hill from Grinton

Perfect for a shorter adventure or a relaxing afternoon ramble, this local favourite takes you up through heather-clad slopes to the summit of Calver Hill. The views across Swaledale are simply breathtaking, and it’s a lovely option before or after lunch.

  • Keep dogs on a lead near livestock and on the shooting moors during bird nesting season (March–July).
  • Always carry fresh water and a portable bowl, especially in warm weather.
  • Check for ticks after walks through bracken, grass, or woods.
  • Protect paws on rocky paths and pack a towel for wet days!
