Accommodation Description
Ivy Cottage is a charming, stone-built self-catering holiday cottage in the heart of Langthwaite, a picturesque village in Arkengarthdale, just 3 miles from Reeth and within the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Ivy Cottage has been transformed through recent renovations into a high-quality bolthole and cosy sanctuary for two people. The sympathetic renovation has retained much of the original character and features such as exposed beams and a stone wall. Yet it still offers contemporary appliances and furnishings for modern day living and a true home from home experience.
This extremely welcoming holiday cottage offers everything you need for a relaxing stay and is surprisingly spacious for a one-bedroom property. Every nook and cranny bursts with a creative mix of old and new. You enter the good sized living room with dining area. The focal point is no doubt the multi-fuel stove situated in a stunning inglenook fireplace in the centre of the room. Not only does it look fabulous, the stove throws out the heat when lit, creating a warm and cosy ambiance to unwind on the comfy sofa.
Off the living room, down a couple of steps, is the quaint and traditional cottage kitchen with an Aga. Packed full of quality cooking equipment, there’s also plenty of storage space for your own supplies and the additional bonus of a full-size fridge and freezer.
Upstairs is the real treat. A spacious bedroom with a sumptuous king bed, beautiful soft furnishings and views to the village and the fells beyond. Off the bedroom is the high quality, modernised ensuite bathroom with bath and shower over.
This stunning holiday home is heated throughout by modern electric radiators, includes free, unlimited Wi-Fi and a 43” smart TV. There is a small, enclosed patio area to the front of the cottage to enjoy a glass of wine of a summer evening or a coffee first thing…no better place to hear the song of the birds and the babble of the not-so-distant stream known as Arkle Beck.
Off the patio there is a secure, covered bike store, which is spacious with plenty of room for two bikes. There is a hose nearby to keep your bikes squeaky clean, heating in the bike store to dry your bikes off and electric sockets for electric bike charging. The bike store also doubles up as a drying room for outdoor walking gear.
Although the cottage caters for modern needs, be prepared to be thrown back in time, in this oldy worldly village. ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ fans will no doubt recognise the village and surrounding areas as lots of the original series was filmed in the area and in Langthwaite…and it really hasn’t changed a bit!
If you enjoy a tipple or two in a real Yorkshire pub, you are in luck. One of the smallest and most unique pubs in the area is a short hop, skip and a jump from Ivy Cottage. The landlady is a fountain of knowledge on the area and serves some fantastic real Yorkshire Ale. The award-winning CB Inn is around a 10 to 15-minute walk from the accommodation, which offers gastro style meals, real Yorkshire ales and an extensive wine and gin menu.
The location is fantastic, with great walking, running and cycling straight from the doorstep. The area is full of the remains of the lead mining industry, walks to suit all abilities from high level hikes up Fremington Edge or Calver Hill to low level strolls along the Arkle Beck. There really is so much to do and enjoy.
The market towns of Richmond, Leyburn and Hawes, and attractions, including the famous Aysgarth Falls, Wensleydale Creamery,The Bowes Museum and Bolton Castle are all within a short, glorious drive away.
Parking is available in the village on a first come first serve basis but we would ask you to respect the needs of local people and park in the local car park three minutes walk away once you have unloaded. The cottage comes with a parking permit so you do not incur any additional expense.
To ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible, included in the rental fee is – luxury bed linen and towels and electricity. Initial fuel for the fire is included and there is an honesty box to pay for further supplies.
The cottage comes with a welcome basket of Yorkshire treats and basics so you don’t need to think about bringing all those with you.

Location
Langthwaite
Langthwaite is one of the few villages in Arkengarthdale, North Yorkshire. It is also the largest and the main settlement in the dale and only 3 miles north of Reeth. The road leading to Langthwaite from Reeth is winding and unfenced, sheep roam freely and there are fantastic views of the rugged and wild landscape that is so defining of Arkengarthdale. ...

The history of Reeth dates way back to the 18th Century, where it used to be the capital of the lead mining industry and a local centre for hand knitting, with a population of 1,460. However, the area has evolved into the centre of the beautiful farming community that we see today. At the heart of Reeth is a triangular green, surrounded by the local community, pubs, teas rooms, restaurant and gift shops. Beyond the immediate surrounds the village is overlooked by the stunning fells of Fremington Edge and Calver Hill which we can guarantee will provide a stunning backdrop to your visit. ...

The Coast to Coast walk passes very close by the village but for those that are not so keen on such a challenge, there are many less strenuous walks in the area. For example, there is a beautiful walk that takes you nearly all the way to Grinton on the banks of the River Swale at the foot of the valley. Whilst you stroll along the river bank you can take in the stunning views of the rolling hills either side of you, which is stunning on a summers day! ...

Judith –
Fun cottage in the cute village of Langthwaite. The cottage is tastefully decorated, comfortable, with a fully equipped kitchen. Welcome gifts were appreciated. We would stay at Ivy Cottage again!
Neil –
There’s a really good pub nearby for food. If you’re into sights, there are plenty of castles or other historic sites within 30-45 minutes and we visited quite a few. We particularly enjoyed Bolton Castle and if you go there, it’s worth heading to Askrigg for one of the best bakeries/ delis we’ve ever visited. Great scones, pies, quiches, salads and cakes. We also loved our visit to Kiplin Hall, where we found the most engaging room guides we’ve come across on our travels. We also want to mention the welcome basket (bread, eggs, milk, jam/marmalade), which was so thoughtful and not very common. All in all a great find, we’d love to go back and spend a little more time sitting on the patio soaking up the sunshine and listening to the birds singing.
Katie –
We absolutely loved staying in Ivy Cottage. It was clean, tidy and well equipped. The village is beautiful so many walks in the area too. We enjoyed our walk to Reeth along the river and through the Dales. We also had a short walk up towards Booze and back down along the river. The Red Lion was a cosy pub to grab a drink. Rowena the landlady was very knowledgeable and proud of the area. Definitely want to revisit this fabulous cottage. Thank you
Karishma –
We had a wonderful stay at Hannah’s, warm, cosy and comfortable. Would highly recommend!

Absolutely gorgeous cottage in a quintessentially Yorkshire village. One of the best Airbnb’s we have stayed in!
Cole –
Amazing weekend! Thank you for being such a great host!! Hope we can manage to get back to visit again some time! many thanks, Cole
Appreciate the great hospitality! what an amazing quiet village to get away from everything! Was what we needed whilst going through buying our first house so thank you ????
Pam –
Fantastic cottage in a beautiful village. We felt at home and wish we had stayed for longer. Beautiful walks from the doorstep. Hannah was a great communicator. Look forward to returning. Thank you Hannah for a wonderful stay.
Kevin –
Langthwaite is a beautiful village with great pub and walks from the cottage.
Helen –
Lovely peaceful location, good walks from the door and a very short walk back from the Red Lion which is well worth a visit. Everything you can think of in the cottage to make a very comfortable stay.
Jack –
Fantastic little cottage, perfect for a weekend retreat and a good base for walks. The place is very much looked after and well stocked. The CB Inn just up the road is certainly recommended for an evening meal, and especially for a Sunday roast. Only tip with the cottage is to get your access code prior to arrival as there’s no phone service in the village.
Onai –
We found the cottage lovely and exactly as the photos showed. It was in a quiet location with easy access to good walking/running routes. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for some time away their normal lives.
Ruth –
Ivy Cottage was a perfect getaway cottage for the two of us. It was well equipped, warm, comfortable and clean and in a spectacular location. We had to remember to duck as we walked into the kitchen as we’re both tall!! I would have no hesitation recommending this cottage and host.
Tim & Nicky –
Ivy Cottage is a lovely, well-appointed holiday accommodation, with a cosy log fire and a very comfortable bed. Tastefully decorated and beautifully clean, the welcome basket of Yorkshire produce and additional local walking guides, were much appreciated. Good local pub within walking distance up the road for food and drink at the Red Lion is just a few meters from the cottage door. If you are looking for breath-taking scenery, friendly locals, and a great place to stay, look no further than Ivy Cottage in Langthwaite. Excellent communication with the owners. Thank you. We will be back!
Macca –
Stunning location and beautiful cottage, couldn’t have asked for a nicer stay! Lovely walks and running routes on your doorstep! Log burner added to the cosy feel. It really is a perfect place to switch off and enjoy the local surroundings and countryside. Would definitely recommend a stay at this cottage! You won’t regret it.
Lucy –
Lovely cottage in a lovely area, good if you want to relax and have some peace and quiet. Very clean. Responsive and helpful host.
Rachel –
We had a wonderful stay at Ivy Cottage. The location is beautiful and the cottage was really comfy and cosy. Great pub opposite and we had a lovely meal nearby at the CB Inn. So many fab walks from the doorstep- it’s a great base to explore Arkengarthdale from. Thank you for having us 🙂
Richard –
Ivy Cottage is a gem of a cottage in a beautiful location. The living accommodation is perfect for two: it’s well equipped and is a cosy base for exploring the area. The bedroom is a highlight – it’s spacious and airy, and the bed is extremely comfortable. Despite having plenty of rain during our visit (January), we found plenty to do in the area. Waterfalls at Aysgarth, Hardraw Force and High Force were highlights. There are also good walks straight out of the door of the cottage. On a particularly wet day, we managed to book last minute for a very entertaining day at Lacey’s Cheesemakers in Reeth, the next village. Coming from the South, we appreciated the peace and wide open spaces of the Dales. In the midst of a busy period of our lives, Ivy Cottage gave us a few days of real relaxation: we would highly recommend it. Thank you.
Rachael –
Beautiful peaceful area, cosy cottage, well equipped with everything we needed. Comprehensive instructions on how to use the amenities and lots of useful information on the local area. Ideal for exploring the Dales and particularly good for those who like to walk. The cottage has a large light bedroom with views of the countryside, loads of storage space and an extremely comfortable bed! Thoroughly recommended – and a place we would have no hesitation in coming back to.
Neil –
Comfortable cottage with pleasant sizable bedroom and bathroom. However- very low doorway through to kitchen. Being a tall person I bashed my head. Also log burner inefficient. Got through many logs but it didn’t throw out much warmth.
Fiona –
Ivy Cottage is a cosy cottage right in the heart of the Dales. It’s welcoming, clean and everything has been done to ensure you have a wonderful stay. The welcome hamper with a voucher for a free drink at the pub opposite was a real suprise. Everyone in the village and pub were really friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back! Thankyou!
Denise –
Wonderful idyllic cottage in lovely quiet location. Enjoyed some stunning walks from the cottage. Would definitely return
Vicky –
I’ve just spent 6 amazing nights over Christmas at Ivy Cottage, and everything about it is absolutely wonderful! Firstly it’s the most stunning little village I’ve ever been too, with a lovely pub and some lovely walks right on your doorstep. The cottage is truly beautiful, looks even better than the pictures with everything you could ask for! I was even left some bread, eggs, jam and milk! The cottage had everything I needed so really all I should have taken was my clothes. The log burner was the best part for me, couldn’t get enough of it. I bought my own logs and kindling even though a basket is provided, but for a bit extra you can purchase more. Hannah was lovely to communicate with and would answer all my questions, I’ve already recommended Ivy Cottage to my family who plan to book it for a walking holiday in the spring. Definitely book, it really is a magical cottage in a magical village! I’ll definitely be back.
Georgia –
We had the most amazing few days away in such an idyllic cottage – we didn’t want to leave. The area is outstandinly beautiful and the location was the perfect spot to explore from. The cottage was spotlessly clean, with everything you could ever need and more. Even a pre-laid fire waiting for us. Thank you!
Chris –
As good as it looks. Very clean and cosy
Brian –
Very nice place, lovely location and very well equipped.
Sophie Crowe –
Ivy cottage was perfect and the hosts had made it so welcoming . It was warm and cosy and set in beautiful little village . The little touches like milk and bread on arrival really made a difference. Thank you
Bob –
Since it was a very late booking, we managed to gain access and everything was very smart. The house very clean, easy to work appliances. Very nicely decorated. Plus a great location
Anthea –
The cottage is perfect in every way. The village is remote, unspoilt and very quiet. Perfect for getting away from life’s business & is half way up the Tan Hill climb (if you’re a keen cyclist!) The cottage is beautiful. Bigger than we were expecting, cosy and with everything you could expect/ need. We’re already checking our diaries to work out when we can get back there
John –
Lovely place, quiet and peaceful nice relaxing place to stay.
Chris –
We had a super stay in Ivy Cottage, which was a perfect space for the two of us for just under a week.
Laine –
Perfect in every way.
Sarah –
Cosy little cottage in the Yorkshire dales. Idyllic location, helpful communication from host and a thoughtful welcome package on arrival, would definitely recommend!
Alisha –
Lovely cottage. Very beautiful surroundings. We really loved our stay. Extra comfy bed! Alisha
Tom –
A perfect cottage filled with charm and character in a lovey little village with access to walks, hikes, cycling etc …. And many hills ha
Was a brilliant base for my relaxing trip. Hannah was brilliant in communication etc. thanks!
Jim –
Stayed for 6 nights. Probably one of the most comfortable AirBnBs we’ve stayed in. The bedroom is very large, light and airy with comfortable bed and linen. Powerful shower/bath off the bedroom. The living room was lovely and cosy with books, games, DVDs and a smart tv to keep you occupied when in. Kitchen was well equipped, using an Aga to cook was different! A lovely welcome package of essentials was a nice touch. Great location if you are a serious walker but if you’re not, you obviously like driving around the scenery if you book here. The scenery is absolutely incredible, as are some of the drives high up over the moors on single lane roads. With sheep everywhere you need to keep your wits about you. No phone signal, our sat nav struggled so you’ll need to read maps! Also make a note of the key lock box number when you are given it, because when you’re at the front door for the first time you can’t access AirBnB or email to find out what it is! Lots we didn’t do, so more to come back for. Would highly recommend
Guy –
An absolutely ideal place for any couple to stay. Generously sized bedroom and bathroom. Well equipped kitchen. But above all a great location. Local pub full of character but no food (and no shop) so shop before you get there. We will return. Thanks for a great stay
Matthew –
Thank you for a wonderful stay in this idyllic location. The cottage is a beautiful historic building, but also very clean, comfortable and warm inside. Our 19-month-old daughter loved it too – Hannah was happy for us to bring our own travel cot, and everything seemed child-friendly and safe. (We didn’t use the log burner, but the central heating is enough to heat the house.) There are numerous walking possibilities from Langthwaite without needing to drive anywhere, and there is a folder in the house detailing several routes, plus an OS map framed on the wall – we went up Fremington Edge on our last day, and the views were amazing.
Mary –
This was the best air bnb I have stayed in. The bed was just so comfortable and waking up to all that birdsong was magnificent. The cottage was really cosy and well equipped and it’s location was great – so close to the pub! The village is in a great location and you can have some great walks from the front door, as well as walk to another pub for a great dinner (the CB Inn). I would highly recommend staying here!
Fiona –
Ivy Cottage is a delight! A really romantic retreat. The owners have thought of everything and it is extremely comfortable, well equipped and spotlessly clean. A very generous welcome package was waiting for us. Even the cottage handbook was extremely helpful. It is in a quiet village, just of the beaten track and is a real haven to come home to, after a day of walking or visiting the abundance of attractions in the area. The patio is a lovely space to sit and quietly with glimpses of the hills and fields surrounding the village. What a treasure!
Thank you for the communications prior to our visit, that level of contact made us feel very confident in our choice.
Tanya –
Cosy cottage in a beautiful setting. Perfect for exploring the Dales and surrounding villages. Wonderful walks with stunning views.
Elizabeth –
Ivy Cottage was a wonderful gem in the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage is spacious and it had everything we needed for our stay. The check-in process was very smooth with Hannah’s detailed instructions, and the house book was full of great tips for everything we needed. The kitchen is very well-equipped, so it was easy for us to prepare meals. The bedroom and bathroom were comfortable. And the living room was a wonderful spot to light a fire and spend a snowy day. Hannah was very responsive throughout our stay. We would recommend Ivy Cottage to anyone and gladly stay here again.
Sandy –
Very well equipped and comfortable cottage. Perfect location – directly opposite the pub! Thank you Hannah, we had a lovely time. Cottage is just fabulous ?
Lizzy –
I booked a weekend stay as a gift for my mum and her partner. She had a lovely stay and was really impressed with the finish of the cottage, how well equipped it was and the thoughtful touches such as vouchers for the local pub. Parking in the local car park was no issue and the location is a great base to explore Swaledale.
Eilse –
Great cottage, would definitely stay there again
Grace –
It’s impossible not to have a wonderful time in such an incredible location. Hannah’s recommendations of places to go, walks, pubs etc were all really lovely and their website has loads of great info including walking routes. I recommend using the AllTrails app to find some more incredible walks close by. The pub over the road is a really lovely cosy spot for a true Yorkshire experience and real relaxation. The cottage is really warm and cosy, wood burning stove left ready to light, well equipped and beautiful. Hannah sorted out an extra night for us at short notice when we changed our minds impromptu because we were having such a great time. She is super efficient, helpful and kind. We asked a lot of questions and beforehand and during she was always wonderful! Highly recommended.
Amber –
Amazing location with great walks from the door. Lovely pub nearby for good food. Cosy log burner and loved the Aga! Friendly owner. Fabulous views from every window.
Mark –
Perfect stay. The cottage is so well equipped, and Hannah had been so thoughtful with the welcome. A lovely basket of goodies on arrival. It really did feel like home. So peaceful and relaxing. Location is fab, walks in every direction, and the Red Lion within a stone’s throw. We would thoroughly recommend. 5 stars!!!!
Hannah and Ben –
This is an absolutely incredible cottage, and we would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing retreat in the Dales. This is a great base to explore the local area. The hosts had thought of every eventuality and it’s well set up for everything you’d need. The living room is really cosy with a lovely fire and smart tv. The kitchen is well equipped. Everything was spotless when we arrived, and we would thoroughly recommend! The photos don’t show how close it is to the pub too – it’s literally 1 minute away!
Alison –
A beautiful cottage in a stunning location! The cottage has been really thoughtfully renovated and is so warm & cosy. Lots of little extra touches like a welcome hamper, basic supplies in the kitchen, toiletries in the bathroom and a very comprehensive information pack – much more than you would expect from most cottages. Lovely food at the CB Inn just a 10 min walk away, a drinking pub just across the lane, and lots of walks from the door. We will definitely return!
Angus –
A lovely cottage with a very comfortable bed
