Accommodation Description

Ivy Cottage is a charming, stone-built self-catering holiday cottage in the heart of Langthwaite, a picturesque village in Arkengarthdale, just 3 miles from Reeth and within the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Ivy Cottage has been transformed through recent renovations into a high-quality bolthole and cosy sanctuary for two people. The sympathetic renovation has retained much of the original character and features such as exposed beams and a stone wall. Yet it still offers contemporary appliances and furnishings for modern day living and a true home from home experience.

This extremely welcoming holiday cottage offers everything you need for a relaxing stay and is surprisingly spacious for a one-bedroom property. Every nook and cranny bursts with a creative mix of old and new. You enter the good sized living room with dining area. The focal point is no doubt the multi-fuel stove situated in a stunning inglenook fireplace in the centre of the room. Not only does it look fabulous, the stove throws out the heat when lit, creating a warm and cosy ambiance to unwind on the comfy sofa.

Off the living room, down a couple of steps, is the quaint and traditional cottage kitchen with an Aga. Packed full of quality cooking equipment, there’s also plenty of storage space for your own supplies and the additional bonus of a full-size fridge and freezer.

Upstairs is the real treat. A spacious bedroom with a sumptuous king bed, beautiful soft furnishings and views to the village and the fells beyond. Off the bedroom is the high quality, modernised ensuite bathroom with bath and shower over.

This stunning holiday home is heated throughout by modern electric radiators, includes free, unlimited Wi-Fi and a 43” smart TV.  There is a small, enclosed patio area to the front of the cottage to enjoy a glass of wine of a summer evening or a coffee first thing…no better place to hear the song of the birds and the babble of the not-so-distant stream known as Arkle Beck.

Although the cottage caters for modern needs, be prepared to be thrown back in time, in this oldy worldly village. ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ fans will no doubt recognise the village and surrounding areas as lots of the original series was filmed in the area and in Langthwaite…and it really hasn’t changed a bit!

If you enjoy a tipple or two in a real Yorkshire pub, you are in luck. One of the smallest and most unique pubs in the area is a short hop, skip and a jump from Ivy Cottage. The landlady is a fountain of knowledge on the area and serves some fantastic real Yorkshire Ale. The award-winning CB Inn is around a 10 to 15-minute walk from the accommodation, which offers gastro style meals, real Yorkshire ales and an extensive wine and gin menu.

The location is fantastic, with great walking, running and cycling straight from the doorstep. The area is full of the remains of the lead mining industry, walks to suit all abilities from high level hikes up Fremington Edge or Calver Hill to low level strolls along the Arkle Beck. There really is so much to do  and enjoy.

The market towns of Richmond, Leyburn and Hawes, and attractions, including the famous Aysgarth Falls, Wensleydale  Creamery,The Bowes Museum and Bolton Castle are all within a short, glorious drive away.

Parking is available in the village on a first come first serve basis but we would ask you to respect the needs of local people and park in the local car park three minutes walk away once you have unloaded. The cottage comes with a parking permit so you do not incur any additional expense.

To ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible, included in the rental fee is – luxury  bed linen and towels and electricity. Initial fuel for the fire is included and there is an honesty box to pay for further supplies.

The cottage comes with a welcome basket of Yorkshire treats and basics so you don’t need to think about bringing all those with you.

Langthwaite

Langthwaite is one of the few villages in Arkengarthdale, North Yorkshire. It is also the largest and the main settlement in the dale and only 3 miles north of Reeth. The road leading to Langthwaite from Reeth is winding and unfenced, sheep roam freely and there are fantastic views of the rugged and wild landscape that is so defining of Arkengarthdale. ...

Reeth

The history of Reeth dates way back to the 18th Century, where it used to be the capital of the lead mining industry and a local centre for hand knitting, with a population of 1,460. However, the area has evolved into the centre of the beautiful farming community that we see today. At the heart of Reeth is a triangular green, surrounded by the local community, pubs, teas rooms, restaurant and gift shops. Beyond the immediate surrounds the village is overlooked by the stunning fells of Fremington Edge and Calver Hill which we can guarantee will provide a stunning backdrop to your visit. ...

Low Row

The Coast to Coast walk passes very close by the village but for those that are not so keen on such a challenge, there are many less strenuous walks in the area. For example, there is a beautiful walk that takes you nearly all the way to Grinton on the banks of the River Swale at the foot of the valley. Whilst you stroll along the river bank you can take in the stunning views of the rolling hills either side of you, which is stunning on a summers day! ...

Ivy cottage was a wonderfully cosy escape, nestled in the beautifully unspoilt village of Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale, the northernmost Yorkshire Dale. We had a relaxing few days with a mix of indoor and outdoor, out of range for peace and quiet but close enough to the vibrant village of Reeth and the welcoming CB Inn a short half mile up the road. The cottage was warm, surprisingly spacious and had good facilities for our stay. There was a small hamper of delicious bread from a local bakery with jam, two artisan chocolates and a pint of milk in the fridge, and also a voucher for a complimentary drink just a stones throw away at the delightful Red Lion Inn. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend Ivy Cottage.

  2. Thomas

Amazing place! super clean and had everything you need. Was very cosy. will be back!

  3. Christine

Lovely comfortable cottage in a beautiful quiet part of the dales. Communication from Julie is very good. Very comfortable bed. The kitchen is well equipped and we had everything we needed for our short stay. Cooking is on an electric aga so takes longer than the average oven or hob to heat up but all instructions are provided and it worked perfectly fine for us. Do heed the warnings re low doorways .Although the weather wasn’t great we enjoyed being able to go walking straight out of the door up the hill behind the village to Booze and beyond. There is also a pretty walk around Reeth and Grinton just 3 miles or so up the road. The local shop in Reeth had enough for us to make an evening meal when we hadn’t enough time to go shopping further afield. Julie left us some welcome local treats and a complimentary drink voucher for the Red Lion Inn in the village, which has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We enjoyed an excellent meal at the CB Inn. Parking in local car park worked OK.

Ivy cottage is a cozy little cottage in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire. There is a wealth of information in a folder for renters to read, it was extremely helpful for local information and for how everything works at the cottage. Great facilities at the cottage and everything you need is there. The basket of logs was a lovely touch too, thank you Hannah. We will definitely be back soon

  12. Rachel

We had a little trouble locating the cottage when we arrived as it is quite tucked away- however that is part of it’s charm! There was a welcome basket of goodies waiting for us and some milk and eggs in the fridge- all very much appreciated. Beautiful cosy cottage with log burner and the comfiest bed ever. Great location and helpful and responsive hosts- would recommend.

  13. Pat

A Fantastic place to stay, right in the middle of Langthwaite. Excellent facilities and loads of space as well as some of the country’s best hiking on the doorstep.

  14. Robert

This cottage is in a wonderful location and is super cozy and comfortable. Its well equipped, a real home from home. We had lovely walks through stunning countryside directly from the cottage, there is also loads of places of interest just a short drive away. Our hosts were extremely helpful and even went to the trouble of getting a few vegan treats for us on our arrival, which was really appreciated. This was one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in.
