Accommodation Description

Welcome to Marrick Moor House Cottage – a cosy, ‘get away from it all’ cottage in the stunningly beautiful surroundings of Swaledale and the unrivalled beauty of North Yorkshire; traditional villages dotted along Dales where rivers and streams tumble, dry stone walls stretch for miles and miles, expansive moorland where the air is fresh and isolation almost guaranteed, market towns which bustle with life and historic castles, abbeys and museums  can be explored.  The Yorkshire Dales and wider North Yorkshire, really do have to be experienced to be believed and Marrick Moor House Cottage is a great bolt hole to base yourself.

The ethos of the cottage is to enable you to have a comfortable, hassle-free holiday in an environment which feels warm, welcoming and easy.  The dining kitchen room is a light and fully functional space in which to cook, eat and enjoy views overlooking the surrounding countryside.  Kitchenware, crockery and space enable you to do as much or little cooking as you wish.  A small welcome pack of essentials (coffee, milk, bread, biscuits and a bottle of something!) will greet you on arrival.

The cottage is located in open countryside where rural life abounds; the birdsong includes the plaintive call of curlews, lapwings whirl, families of partridge and pheasants graze and at night owls hoot amongst a huge variety of other birds; hares chase across surrounding fields; flocks of sheep are regularly shepherded along the roads by local farmers; the light shifts and changes with the weather and night skies are properly dark!

The cottage garden has lawn, private driveway, 2 patio areas (one shaded by the small wooded area and the other in a sun trap immediately outside the door) and both have areas to comfortably eat alfresco or simply relax and enjoy the peace and beauty the space offers.  The garden is surrounded by traditional dry stone walling and is dog friendly ie it’s a safe and secure place for your pet(s) as long as gates are shut and your dog doesn’t like jumping high walls!

Walks, drives and bike rides are easy right from the cottage gates.  The cottage is situated very close to the pathway at the Fremington end of Fremington Edge – a walk along which will provide you with breath-taking views along both Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.  If you walk it’s length and follow Arkle Beck for a short distance, you’ll end up in the quaint village of Langthwaite with the Red Lion Pub at it’s centre where you can get a well earned refreshment (doesn’t do food other than a great range of snacks!).

The cottage is within walking distance of both Reeth and Grinton (approx. 2 miles away) where the nearest pubs can be found.  Small village shops, craft/gift shops, a local museum and post office are located in Reeth.  Dales Bike Centre, where you can hire bikes (E bikes included) and grab a drink and bite to eat in its new cafe is just down the road.  Most local pubs are dog friendly and provide food.  A wider range of shops, supermarkets, petrol stations and other eateries cam be found in Richmond (7 miles) and Catterick Garrison (approx. 10 miles).

For a change of pace, the cities of York, Leeds, Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne are all within an easy hour or so drive from the cottage as well as the larger and traditional Yorkshire towns of Harrogate, Ripon and Northallerton.  The North Yorkshire Moors and coastal areas including Whitby and Scarborough are also good day trips to be considered.

The cottage is a great place to come back to after a day exploring somewhere new or revisiting favourite places.  It is your own space for your stay but help and advice is on hand from the owners who live right next door if needed or wanted – their wish is for you to have a great holiday!

Oil fired central heating, all linens, electricity, basic cleaning items (including dishwasher tablets 1 per day, laundry detergent, washing up liquid) are included in the facilities provided. Free WiFi providing internet access is available.  The living room is small and cosy, providing space to relax and has television (with Amazon Firestick) and a games cupboard. A double and a twin-bedded bedroom, both with great views, have televisions and their own ensuite shower and wc rooms.  There is a cloakroom on the ground floor.  An awareness of environmental issues are part of life at Marrick Moor House and Cottage – compliance with using septic tank is needed i.e. using bins for disposal of all but loo roll and use of septic tank friendly cleaning products (supplied).

Dogs (max of 2) are welcomed free of extra charge.  Please be mindful of furniture and not allowing dogs either upstairs or to be left unattended.  Guests are kindly asked to ensure that the garden area is left free of dog waste and is cleared regularly during your stay.  The owners are dog friendly and have their own dogs.

Stunning scenery, huge vistas, familiar places (often used in film and tv), peace, nature, plenty to see and do for a great holiday are all on your doorstep whilst staying and relaxing into life at Marrick Moor House Cottage.

  1. Ann

Had a great time at the cottage. It was perfect for a quiet time away from the fireworks for bonfire night. The cottage had everything we needed and we loved having both bathrooms as en-suites. We especially enjoyed the board games provided.

  2. Debbie and Richard

Staying at this lovely cottage made out well great, we felt welcome as soon as we arrived. The dog enjoyed the garden and the long walks and the six year old was over the moon to have her own bathroom. The nearby village of Reeth makes a great starting point for lots of walks and there are plenty of cakes to explore as well. All in all a very pleasant and relaxing week. Thank you Debbie and Richard.
