A Peaceful Afternoon at Jervaulx Abbey

If you’re looking for a peaceful and scenic outing during your stay with us, we highly recommend a visit to Jervaulx Abbey – a wonderfully tranquil and historic site set in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside..

We recently spent a lovely afternoon there, wandering among the atmospheric ruins of this former Cistercian abbey. The site is privately owned and open to visitors, with an honesty box for donations that help support its upkeep. It’s a refreshingly relaxed experience—no ticket booths or time slots—just ancient stone walls, wildflowers growing between the cracks, and the sound of birdsong as you explore at your own pace.

The abbey is also suitable for those with limited mobility. The walk from the car park to the entrance is flat, and the paths leading to the ruins are well-maintained with gravel surfaces. While the area immediately around the ruins is mostly grass, it’s generally even underfoot and easy to navigate for most visitors.

The grounds are dog-friendly too, so your furry friend doesn’t have to miss out on the adventure. Dogs must be kept on a lead, but they’re welcome to join you as you explore the peaceful surroundings.

After our walk around the abbey, we stopped by the on-site café, which turned out to be a real treat. It’s just a short stroll from the ruins and serves up homemade cakes, light lunches, and proper cups of tea—just the thing to round off a gentle afternoon of exploring. Alternatively, you’re welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy it within the abbey grounds (just not in the café area). It’s a lovely spot for lunch—just remember to take all your rubbish home with you and leave the site as beautiful as you found it.

Although we didn’t tackle any of the circular walks in the area this time, there are several footpaths nearby for those looking to stretch their legs further. The surrounding parkland and river views make it a great base for a longer walk, so it’s worth bringing your walking boots if you fancy it.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or just fancy a peaceful place to wander, Jervaulx Abbey makes a great addition to your holiday itinerary.
