If you’re staying in one of our holiday cottages in Swaledale or the surrounding area, you’re perfectly placed to explore some of North Yorkshire’s most atmospheric historic sites—and Easby Abbey should definitely be on your list.

Just a short drive from Richmond, Easby Abbey, an English Heritage site, is one of the best-preserved monasteries of its kind in the country. Founded in the 12th century by the Premonstratensian order (known as the “White Canons”), the abbey sits in a peaceful riverside setting that’s as photogenic as it is fascinating. Surrounded by meadows and the gentle flow of the River Swale, it’s a place where history feels very much alive.

A Ruin Full of Stories

Although the abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in the 1530s, much of the structure remains, including the impressive refectory, gatehouse, and canons’ dormitory. You can still trace the layout of the complex and imagine what life might have been like here hundreds of years ago.

Next door is the beautifully preserved St Agatha’s Church, which is still in regular use today. Step inside and you’ll find medieval wall paintings and centuries-old craftsmanship that add to the sense of timelessness. If you’re visiting on a Sunday or special occasion, you might even catch a service—an extraordinary experience in such a historic setting.

A Peaceful Spot to Unwind

Easby Abbey isn’t just a site of historical interest—it’s also a wonderful place to simply stop and relax. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch on the grass surrounded by ancient stone walls and sweeping views. It’s the perfect spot to read a book, do a little sketching, or soak up the sun on a warm day. The peaceful atmosphere makes it feel like a secret escape from the everyday, ideal for those looking to slow down and savour their surroundings.

A Scenic Walk into Richmond

From the abbey, a lovely riverside footpath leads you all the way into Richmond—a gentle and picturesque walk of about a mile. It’s mostly flat, easy-going, and full of scenic views. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for kingfishers, herons, and other local wildlife.

As you arrive in Richmond, you’re rewarded with one of North Yorkshire’s most charming market towns. If you’re ready for refreshments, The Station is a fantastic place to stop. Housed in a restored Victorian railway building, it’s a vibrant hub of food, art, and community.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • café and bakery serving homemade meals and cakes.
  • An ice cream parlour—perfect on sunny days.
  • microbrewery and taproom, where you can sample local ales or even take a few bottles back to your cottage.
  • Independent shops and artisan food producers offering everything from cheeses to handmade chocolates.

Parking and Practical Tips

There is a small car park right next to Easby Abbey, making it easy to start your visit there. At the time of writing, a small donation is requested for parking—£2 for a full day or £1 for a half day—which helps support the upkeep of this peaceful site. The abbey ruins are free to enter and open daily from 10am until 5pm, so you can explore at your leisure. If the car park happens to be full, don’t worry—you can easily do the walk in reverse. Simply park at The Station in Richmond (where there’s ample parking), then follow the scenic riverside footpath to the abbey. After soaking up the history and tranquillity of Easby, you can return the same way and finish your day with refreshments, a pint, or an ice cream back at The Station before heading home.

Paws Welcome at Easby Abbey and The Station

This day out is just as enjoyable for four-legged friends, too. Dogs on leads are welcome at Easby Abbey, so your pup can explore the atmospheric ruins right alongside you. The riverside walk into Richmond is also ideal for dogs, with plenty of space to sniff and roam. Once you reach The Station, you’ll be pleased to know that dogs are welcome there as well, including in the café area—so you can enjoy a well-earned coffee or slice of cake without leaving your canine companion behind.

Make a Day of It

Combining a visit to Easby Abbey with a walk into Richmond makes for a relaxed and rewarding day out. Whether you’re a keen historian, a nature lover, or simply someone who enjoys a good stroll followed by a great coffee, this is a trip that ticks all the boxes.

And the best part? You’ll return to your holiday cottage feeling refreshed, inspired, and a little bit more connected to the rich tapestry of life in North Yorkshire.

So lace up your walking boots, pack your camera, and don’t forget to pick up some treats from The Station to enjoy later by the fire or out on the patio—just one of the many small adventures waiting for you when you stay with us.
