Looking for a peaceful, scenic day out during your stay in one of our Swaledale holiday cottagesKiplin Hall and Gardens, just a short and easy drive away, offers the perfect mix of history, wildlife, and calm open space. Whether you’re visiting as a couple, family, or with a four-legged friend, this beautifully kept estate makes for a relaxed and rewarding outing.

A Garden Lover’s Delight

The real highlight of our visit to Kiplin Hall and Gardens was exploring the beautiful grounds and the walk around the lake. As lovers of flowers and nature, we always enjoy places where you can take your time and really soak up the surroundings—and Kiplin didn’t disappoint. The lake walk is well-signposted and easy underfoot, making it ideal for a gentle, relaxing stroll. It’s also a brilliant walk for dogs, with plenty of space and interesting scents to keep tails wagging. Along the way, we were treated to the sight of geese and their fluffy goslings, peacefully paddling along the water’s edge, and there was birdsong all around us. As the seasons change, so too will the scenery, making it a place you’ll want to revisit throughout the year.

There are also plenty of benches dotted around the gardens, perfect for pausing with a book, enjoying a podcast, or simply sitting quietly to take in the views. The walled garden, though still waking up when we visited, looked full of promise—tidy beds, trained fruit trees, and the early signs of colour starting to emerge. It’s easy to imagine how stunning it will be in full summer bloom.

Step Inside Kiplin Hall

As much as we loved the grounds, it’s well worth stepping inside the house itself, which is included in your ticketKiplin Hall is a beautifully preserved 17th-century building, rich in history and character. Each room tells a different part of the hall’s story, from its royal connections to the lives of those who lived there over the centuries. The interiors are beautifully presented, and many of the original features remain intact, giving a real sense of the past.

What really brings the house to life are the volunteers, who are always happy to chat and share insights—they’re passionate about the place and add a lovely personal touch to your visit. Whether you’re interested in art, architecture, or just curious about how people lived in another era, there’s something to discover in every room.

Fancy a Spot of Fishing?

If you enjoy a peaceful day by the water, fishing is available on the lake at Kiplin Hall—another reason to make a day of it here. The lake is well-stocked and offers a quiet, scenic setting to cast a line and unwind. Fishing must be booked in advance, and a permit is required, which can be arranged through Kiplin Hall’s website or by contacting their office directly. It’s a lovely way to extend your visit—especially if you’re holidaying with someone who enjoys a more laid-back, contemplative pastime while others explore the gardens or house. Don’t forget to bring your own tackle and rod licence if required!

Dog-Friendly and Welcoming

Kiplin Hall is very dog-friendly, with most areas of the gardens and grounds open to well-behaved dogs on leads. The lake walk is especially lovely for dogs, offering a gentle, scenic route with plenty of new scents and sights to enjoy. Water bowls and dog waste bins are available throughout the site, and the staff are always warm and welcoming to canine visitors. Dogs are not permitted inside the hall itself, but there’s still plenty of space to explore outdoors, making it a great destination for dog owners looking to enjoy a relaxed day out.

A Bite to Eat

After your walk, why not relax and enjoy a bite to eat at the modern café and shop at Kiplin Hall? The café offers a bright and stylish space, with a great selection of hot meals, cakes, and drinks, making it the perfect stop for lunch or a post-walk treat. Whether you’re in the mood for a comforting soup, a delicious slice of cake, or a refreshing coffee, there’s something to suit all tastes.

If you’re looking to take something special home with you, the shopstocks a wonderful range of local goods, gifts, and garden items—perfect for finding a memento of your day or a unique Yorkshire treat.

Plan Your Visit

Kiplin Hall is open seasonally, so it’s worth checking the website for up-to-date opening times and events. Entry includes access to both the hall and the grounds, offering a full and rewarding experience for visitors. Whether you’re a keen walker, a history enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful spot to relax, Kiplin Hall and Gardens is an ideal choice.

After our visit, we left feeling refreshed and inspired, already looking forward to returning—perhaps when the walled garden is in full bloom during the summer months.
