Explore the Legacy of Kings: A Day Trip to Middleham Castle

North Yorkshire is rich in history, and among its most compelling landmarks is Middleham Castle—a place where stories of medieval royalty still echo in the walls. This dramatic site in Wensleydale offers a truly memorable destination for a day out during your stay at one of our dales holiday cottages.

Where History and Countryside Meet

The village of Middleham sits quietly in the beautiful dales landscape—yet at its centre stands something quite extraordinary. Middleham Castle, once a powerful stronghold of the north, is most famously associated with Richard III, who spent much of his youth here before rising to the throne.

Even in ruin, the castle has an undeniable presence. You can stroll through the remains of its great hall, climb the stone staircases to breathtaking views over Wensleydale, and trace the layout of what was once a grand residence fit for royalty.

Managed by English Heritage, Middleham Castle offers a fascinating, hands-on experience for all ages. There are interpretive displays, medieval artefacts, and enough space for children (and grown-ups!) to imagine the bustle of knights, courtiers, and royal intrigue.

The huge central keep—one of the largest in England—is still remarkably intact. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Dales, and a sense of why this spot was once considered a seat of power in the north.

What to See and Do in Middleham Village

After exploring the atmospheric ruins of the castle, take time to soak up the charm of Middleham village itself. With its cobbled streets, stone cottages, and welcoming atmosphere, Middleham feels like a step back in time—but with a few modern-day pleasures to enjoy along the way.

The village is renowned for its long-standing connection to horse racing, and you’ll often see elegant thoroughbreds being led through the streets or cantering across the nearby gallops on the hills above. It’s a magical sight that brings a special kind of life and character to the village.

Middleham is also a great place for a stroll. A network of footpaths surrounds the castle, offering peaceful walks through open countryside, scenic tracks along the River Ure, and stunning views back toward the castle from every angle. If you’re up for a longer ramble, you can follow trails that take you around the gallops, giving you a closer look at where some of the country’s finest racehorses train daily.

When it’s time to refuel, you’re spoiled for choice. The village has several cosy pubs and cafés where you can enjoy everything from a relaxed lunch to a proper Yorkshire ale. We especially recommend the Richard III —a firm favourite with visitors and locals alike, known for its friendly service and excellent pub food.

For something a little different, head just outside the village to the Cover Bridge Inn—a traditional country pub with a fantastic riverside beer garden backing onto the River Cover. In the summer months, it’s a lovely place to sit and watch the water go by, and if you’re lucky enough to visit on a weekend, you might catch one of their legendary barbecues, which draw quite a crowd for good reason.

Visiting Middleham Castle: Practical Info & Tips

Middleham Castle is open year-round, offering visitors a chance to explore its historic ruins in every season—from the fresh greenery of spring and the long days of summer to the golden light of autumn and the quiet atmosphere of winter. We recommend checking the English Heritage website in advance for up-to-date seasonal opening hoursticket prices, and details of any special events or family activities, which are often scheduled during school holidays.

The site is dog friendly but dogs must be kept on a lead.

Facilities on-site are simple but well-kept, and there’s a small shop with guidebooks, souvenirs, and refreshments. While there isn’t a café at the castle itself, the village’s lovely tearooms and pubs are just a short stroll away – perfect for warming up or winding down after your visit.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of the outdoors, or simply someone who enjoys discovering places with a story to tell, Middleham Castle is a truly memorable addition to your Yorkshire getaway—and an experience we think you’ll be talking about long after you’ve returned to your holiday cottage.
