If you’re spending time in one of our holiday cottages in Swaledale, you’ll already know how peaceful and beautiful the valley is — but just a short walk from the tranquillity, there’s a hidden chapter of the dale’s story waiting to be discovered.
High above the valley floor, scattered across the wild moorland near Gunnerside, lie the remains of the Old Gang Mines — once a hive of lead mining activity and now one of the most atmospheric places to explore in the Yorkshire Dales.
Whether you’re a keen walker or just curious about local history, this is a brilliant half-day adventure to include in your holiday.
It’s hard to imagine it today, but during the 18th and 19th centuries, Swaledale was one of the busiest lead mining areas in Britain. The Old Gang Mines were among the most productive in the dale, worked by hundreds of men and boys who braved tough weather and dangerous conditions to dig, crush, and smelt lead ore pulled straight from the hillside.
Today, the buildings may be in ruins, but there’s still a sense of the scale of the operation. You’ll see the remains of smelt mills, chimneys, stone-built flues, and workers’ huts — all against a backdrop of sweeping moorland and big skies. It’s quiet now, but if you pause for a moment, it’s easy to imagine the clatter and clanging of industry that once filled the air.
Many of our guests enjoy a visit to the Old Gang Mines as part of a scenic circular walk from Surrender Bridge, just a short drive from Reeth. The route is well-marked and offers a fantastic mix of views, history, and fresh air.
It’s not a difficult walk, but the ground is uneven in places, so we recommend sturdy shoes or walking boots. The route takes you through wide open moorland with views back down to the Swale valley — a wonderful way to stretch your legs and immerse yourself in the landscape.
If you’re staying with us in spring or summer, you might spot curlews, lapwings, or even grouse along the way.
Tips for Visiting
What makes the Old Gang Mines so special is the sense of discovery. You don’t need a guide or ticket — just set off with a flask, your walking boots, and a bit of curiosity. The moorland feels remote and wild, and the crumbling remains of the smelt mills give you a tangible connection to the lives of those who worked here over 150 years ago.
It’s a side of Swaledale many visitors miss, but one that really brings the history of the valley to life.
Make It Part of Your Holiday
So if you’re looking for something a little different during your time in Swaledale — something that combines dramatic scenery, a touch of adventure, and a real sense of place — we’d highly recommend a walk to the Old Gang Mines. You could also drive down either side of the valley afterwards for a refreshing pint in either the Punch Bowl at Low Row or The CB Inn at Langthwaite, both offering a warm welcome and a great place to unwind. After your visit, head back to your cottage, pop the kettle on (or pour a glass of something cold), and enjoy the best bit of walking in the Dales: putting your feet up and looking back on where you’ve been.
