Castles

Scarborough Castle is without a doubt one of Yorkshire’s finest English Heritage attractions and a great place to spend an afternoon.

Scarborough Castle is situated up a steep hill on the stunning Yorkshire coastline and can be viewed from almost everywhere in Scarborough. The steep trek to the top is well worth the effort as from the castle grounds there are wonderful views across the north and south bay.

Falconry in the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales has a lot to offer any budding bird watcher, from the noisy Grouse hidden in the meadows and the proud Peacocks wondering freely to the rare Sandpiper and beautiful Peregrines.

However, there’s nothing better than the satisfaction and excitement of the hands on experience gained at one of the falconry centres in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

Mountain Biking Yorkshire

The Yorkshire Dales is very popular for mountain bikers who flock year after year, wind, rain or shine as it offers thrills, difficult climbs, technical descents and amazing scenery in one hit.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is home to some of the greatest mountain biking in England as has a huge variety of natural trails.

Caving in Yorkshire

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is lucky to home a number of fascinating caves and potholes. Due to this, the national park has become a very popular destination for many experienced cavers, who return time and again to explore further into the complex cave systems that have developed over hundreds and thousands of year.

Luckily for us novices, it isn’t just the experienced that get to explore the underground as there are a number of caving centres and experts in the area that will guide you through the underground systems, instructing you and supplying you with all the equipment that you need.

Fremington Edge and Calver Hill

On a fantastically sunny day in May we chose to hike up Fremington Edge followed by Calver Hill. We started this circular walk from the Bridge Inn in Grinton.

Walk left over the bridge and you shall pass by the Dales Bike Centre as you enter Fremington (which incidentally is a great place to hire bikes and have a snack at their café!).

Burnsall circular via Thorpe, Linton & Grassington

This is a relatively easy walk taking in 3 charming dales villages in Wharfedale. The walk can be started from Burnsall, Thorpe or Grassington. I chose to start at Burnsall as I consider Burnsall to be one of the most beautiful villages in the Yorkshire Dales and home to a great dog friendly pub, The Red Lion Hotel , perfect for a tasty pint at the end of my walk!

Grinton to West Witton via Aysgarth Falls

We set ourselves a challenge to walk to one of our favourite pubs the Fox and Hound in West Witton, Wensleydale – a dying breed of pub. If you’re not familiar with the area than let me tell you that it is quite a trek…but well worth it as Blackie, the landlord has some of the best kept beers in the area! After several glorious Sunny days we decided that tomorrow we shall go on our adventure over the border from Swaledale to Wensleydale and soak up some of the sunshine.
