Accommodation Description

Flat 1, The Literary Institute is an attractive, two bedroom, first floor apartment occupied over two floors, full of character and sits in the heart of the bustling village of Reeth in Swaledale. The flat has been well appointed, and with the addition of modern conveniences makes it a very comfortable holiday home especially as it is a stone’s throw from the pubs, restaurant, cafes and other village amenities.

The flat is on the first floor and boasts fabulous views from the main living area through large sash windows over the village green and beyond to Fremington Edge. You’ll be surprised how spacious, light and airy this holiday home is – yet is extremely cosy and homely.

Access to the flat is via a communal staircase shared with only one other flat. As you enter there is a good size hallway with plenty of space for shoes, boots and coats. There are two doors leading to the large, open plan living, dining and kitchen. Although all in one area the L shape makes the room very spacious and helps to separate the living and dining area. Parking is on a first come first served basis, there is usually a parking space available in front of the flat and also parking on the village green.

The double bedroom is at the rear of the first floor of the flat with a couple of steps leading to it. The single bedroom is on the ground floor next to the family bathroom with shower over. Opposite the bathroom is an additional exit to the shared court yard and secure bike storage racks. There is also access from the street to the rear of the flat and the bike storage so there is no need to bring the bikes through the flat.

This holiday accommodation is ideal for those looking to explore Swaledale by foot or by bike. There are numerous walks straight from the door such as the more challenging hikes up Fremington Edge, Calver Hill and Harkerside or the easier strolls down by the River Swale. Reeth and surrounding areas have now grown in popularity for both mountain biking and road cycling. Again, there are so many routes to choose you will certainly fill your days up easily!

If you wish to explore further afield then simply pop in your car and enjoy the scenic drives up and down dale to the many picturesque villages. Explore the famous spots such as the water splash featured on All Creatures Great and Small, the infamous Buttertubs – which became well known from the Stage 1 of the Tour de France in 2014. Or, why not take a short drive up to the highest pub in England – Tan Hill – the views are incredible and the beer isn’t bad either!

There are also several market towns in the area, such as Leyburn and Hawes both within 30 minutes’ drive from Reeth. Then 30 minutes in the opposite direction is the Georgian town of Richmond, with several attractions worth visiting such as the impressive castle, the waterfalls, the museum, Georgian theatre and The Station full of artisan products, ice cream parlour, cafe and a cinema.

Location

Reeth

The history of Reeth dates way back to the 18th Century, where it used to be the capital of the lead mining industry and a local centre for hand knitting, with a population of 1,460. However, the area has evolved into the centre of the beautiful farming community that we see today. At the heart of Reeth is a triangular green, surrounded by the local community, pubs, teas rooms, restaurant and gift shops. Beyond the immediate surrounds the village is overlooked by the stunning fells of Fremington Edge and Calver Hill which we can guarantee will provide a stunning backdrop to your visit. ...

Richmond was founded by the Normans in 1071, and is overflowing with history, mostly centred around one of the finest tourist attractions in North Yorkshire – Richmond Castle. The castle, finished in 1086, is one of the greatest Norman fortresses in the UK and well worth a visit, not only to hear the history of the unruly North but to see the stunning views of the Dales from the castle keep and the tranquil Cockpit garden. ...

This property is located in a beautiful, quiet area and the people in shops, pubs and the markets were all very friendly. It was a comfortable flat and had all we needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. Hannah was very helpful with all our queries when booking and we appreciated her prompt replies.

  11. Richard

We very much enjoyed our stay at Flat 1, the Literary Institute in Reeth, and hope one day to go back there. The flat was clean and comfortable with a good view of the village green. There are many good walks around Reeth and the “Little White Bus” offers a great service up the valley. For example, one morning we caught the bus from Reeth to Mucker and then spent the day walking back down the valley to Reeth. Reeth agricultural show was a great event to attend. Our one hiccough was setting off the fire alarm (the button is easy to push accidentally in the dark when entering the property because it is right beside the light switch). But phoning the contact number produced a rapid response and it was all sorted out quickly.

  12. Neil

Very nice flat in a lovely location overlooking the village green and with lovely views of surrounding hills. Lots of walks from the flat but also nicely located for exploring further afield. Would happily stay here again.

A fantastic, well thought out and well stocked flat. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need and even included a packet of biscuits and a pint of milk for us to use! Excellent customer service from the host and lovely scenery in the area. We’re planning our next trip as we speak.

  17. Anne

Great wee flat with everything we needed. Excellent location with views to Fremington Edge. Plenty of walks straight from the flat without any need to get in your car. Food vg in both local pubs. We would stay here again.

  18. Andrew

  19. Ed

  20. David

A very nice, clean flat overlooking the village green and hills behind. Living area and larger bedroom are on 1st floor, smaller bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor down private, internal stairs. Flat had all the facilities we needed. Plenty of good walks possible in the area. Reeth Post Office also sells groceries and is open daily. Local pubs serve evening meals but you may need to book a table to eat. I certainly recommend this accommodation.

  21. Tracy

  25. Lyndsey

Lovely location with views across the village green and the hills. Our little boy loved sitting on the window seat looking out at the people and dogs. Good size with everything you need and more for a very comfortable stay. We hope to be back.

  26. Becky

Lovely, well equipped flat in a great location for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. Check in was really easy, and the flat has everything you need. The info on walks and the local area was really helpful, and there are some lovely trails around the village that are great for a run.

  27. Melanie

Fabulously situated flat in the heart of Reeth. My highlight has to be the window seat for watching the comings and goings of the day, from the early morning House Martin flying school (we visited in August), to the dog walkers/people going to fetch their papers etc all backdropped by the stunning Fremington Edge. The flat is very well equipped and unexpectedly spacious, with a very comfortable bed in a dark, quiet bedroom away from the main green and its watering holes (which, even on a Bank Holiday weekend, weren’t noisy). Going on from this point, Reeth has four pubs (including the bar at the Burgoyne Hotel) all situated around the main green. The best in my opinion was The Buck. Excellent food and excellent service. We cycled the excellent, mainly off-road Swale Trail and took drives through Herriot country. Buttertubs pass was a highlight, as were the lovely people of the Dales, who are hugely friendly and welcoming. Loved the Dales and Gwyneth’s charming flat. So good, we will return.

  28. Freya

Really lovely flat in the heart of the village – very clean and well presented and very comfortable

  29. James

Great apartment with a fantastic view – Gwyneth was very helpful too. We really appreciated all the information provided about walks etc in the local area.

  30. Sandra

Such a fabulous spot – I didn’t want to leave! Reeth is a beautiful and vibrant village and this flat makes the most of it. It is comfortable, bright and spacious with outstanding views over the village green and the surrounding countryside. Relaxing with my morning coffee gazing out of the window at the hills and watching all the people and dogs coming and going over the green was one of the highlights of the stay. It was hard to drag ourselves away from the lovely flat to enjoy the fabulous cycling and walking the area has to offer. Not to mention many great pubs! Can’t wait to go back. 🙂

  31. Sally

Lovely flat with great views over Reeth Green. Lovely walks, long and short from flat. You can quickly change temperature in flat to meet personal choice. Lots of cafes, pubs, ice cream shop and village store around the green.

  32. Jeremy

  33. Lee

    A great place to stay.

  34. Anne-Marie

  37. Jim

The flat is even more spacious than it looks in the photos, and provided us with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Settled in the heart of the Reeth, it was easy to fall into village life in the Dales. The only distraction was the ice cream parlour next door… so many flavours to try!

  38. Sheena

Very clean, spacious flat with everything you need for your stay. Quirky, but very well lit with big windows and perfect for walkers/cyclists wanting to access routes from the door.
