Accommodation Description

Flat 1, The Literary Institute is an attractive, two bedroom, first floor apartment occupied over two floors, full of character and sits in the heart of the bustling village of Reeth in Swaledale. The flat has been well appointed, and with the addition of modern conveniences makes it a very comfortable holiday home especially as it is a stone’s throw from the pubs, restaurant, cafes and other village amenities.

The flat is on the first floor and boasts fabulous views from the main living area through large sash windows over the village green and beyond to Fremington Edge. You’ll be surprised how spacious, light and airy this holiday home is – yet is extremely cosy and homely.

Access to the flat is via a communal staircase shared with only one other flat. As you enter there is a good size hallway with plenty of space for shoes, boots and coats. There are two doors leading to the large, open plan living, dining and kitchen. Although all in one area the L shape makes the room very spacious and helps to separate the living and dining area. Parking is on a first come first served basis, there is usually a parking space available in front of the flat and also parking on the village green.

The double bedroom is at the rear of the first floor of the flat with a couple of steps leading to it. The single bedroom is on the ground floor next to the family bathroom with shower over. Opposite the bathroom is an additional exit to the shared court yard and secure bike storage racks. There is also access from the street to the rear of the flat and the bike storage so there is no need to bring the bikes through the flat.

This holiday accommodation is ideal for those looking to explore Swaledale by foot or by bike. There are numerous walks straight from the door such as the more challenging hikes up Fremington Edge, Calver Hill and Harkerside or the easier strolls down by the River Swale. Reeth and surrounding areas have now grown in popularity for both mountain biking and road cycling. Again, there are so many routes to choose you will certainly fill your days up easily!

If you wish to explore further afield then simply pop in your car and enjoy the scenic drives up and down dale to the many picturesque villages. Explore the famous spots such as the water splash featured on All Creatures Great and Small, the infamous Buttertubs – which became well known from the Stage 1 of the Tour de France in 2014. Or, why not take a short drive up to the highest pub in England – Tan Hill – the views are incredible and the beer isn’t bad either!

There are also several market towns in the area, such as Leyburn and Hawes both within 30 minutes’ drive from Reeth. Then 30 minutes in the opposite direction is the Georgian town of Richmond, with several attractions worth visiting such as the impressive castle, the waterfalls, the museum, Georgian theatre and The Station full of artisan products, ice cream parlour, cafe and a cinema.

Location

Reeth

The history of Reeth dates way back to the 18th Century, where it used to be the capital of the lead mining industry and a local centre for hand knitting, with a population of 1,460. However, the area has evolved into the centre of the beautiful farming community that we see today. At the heart of Reeth is a triangular green, surrounded by the local community, pubs, teas rooms, restaurant and gift shops. Beyond the immediate surrounds the village is overlooked by the stunning fells of Fremington Edge and Calver Hill which we can guarantee will provide a stunning backdrop to your visit. ...

The castle, finished in 1086, is one of the greatest Norman fortresses in the UK and well worth a visit, not only to hear the history of the unruly North but to see the stunning views of the Dales from the castle keep and the tranquil Cockpit garden. ...

Hannah was a responsive host who communicated well and clearly with us. She gave helpful recommendations for eating places. The upstairs flat was nicely furnished, very clean and comfortable. It was ideal for a weekend stay in Reeth with lovely views from the lounge over the square and to the hills. Thank you for a great stay.

  2. Stephanie

Hannah was brilliant, she replied to my query (before my booking) promptly & then responded to the following booking promptly too. The apartment was so clean & very welcoming, we really appreciated the welcome package of tea, coffee, milk & amazing locally sourced biscuits! Such a wonderfully located apartment, the village of Reeth is perfect! We loved the views across the Village Green from the apartment- thank you!

  3. Louise

Excellent location in the middle of the village with easy access to lovely walks all around. Lovely coffee and welcome at The Copper Kettle café and great pub food at the Black Bull. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for walks direct from your doorstep.

What a great place to stay in Reeth, looking out over the village green. The flat has everything you could need and the parking is very close by. We would stay there again.

  8. Barbara

We enjoyed our stay. The flat was clean and comfortable with everything we needed, also more spacious than we expected, with plenty of room in the lounge. The position, overlooking the green in Reeth, is very convenient and the views are beautiful. Hannah was very helpful, particularly in allowing some flexibility for check in and check out timings. A great place to stay in the Dales.

  9. Christopher

Would definitely come back again, perhaps a long weekend later in the year if this is available! Plenty to visit around this place.

  10. James

Lovely stay at Flat 1 in Reeth…..couldn’t fault it at all. Would very happily stay again on our next visit to Yorkshire.

  11. James

Great and spacious flat right on the village green. Perfect for long walks in and around Swaledale or shorter ones to the pubs, bakeries and the ice cream parlour Reeth has to offer. The flat itself has everything needed for a short stay. Despite being a good size and an old building you can easily get it cozy and warm. Would love to return as there is plenty more to explore!

  12. Jane

A lovely apartment in the centre of Reeth – spotlessly clean and exactly as described. The kitchen had everything we needed and the addition of a slow cooker was just genius!

  13. Lisa

Beautiful location and very well equipped flat, perfect base and cozy place to return to after a couple of (rather wet!) days out on the hills!

  14. Deboarh

We had a great stay, in beautiful Reeth. The apartment is in a perfect position: stunning views, easy parking and 3 pubs, within a 2 minute walk – what’s not to like? The bed was comfy and the flat was so quiet, so slept really well. Would recommend.

  15. Penny

Clean well equipped flat. A bit short of space in bathroom to put toothbrush etc but perfectly fine and comfortable for a week of walking

  16. Peter

The beds were very comfortable, with good, supportive mattresses. Plenty of pubs in Reeth, for relaxing evenings & the ice cream parlour was a must! Quiet location gave a feeling of safety & tranquility. We would highly recommend.

  21. Alexander

What a lovely place. We woke up every morning marvelling at the stunning views over the village green and the hills beyond. The place itself is wonderful. Spacious, well-equipped, comfortable, absolutely nothing to complain about! Thank you for the tea bags, the milk and the biscuits too. What a lovely touch! Highly recommended!

  22. Mike

Excellent flat. Great location with good view of the square, but surprisinfly quiet as well. Everything you need. Would definitely stay again.

  23. Kathleen

The flat was immaculate, the kitchen was fully equipped, lovely thick towels the bed was so comfortable, the view from the windows were amazing, we couldn’t fault it, the only drawback is the amount of stairs in the flat, but don’t let this put you off, the flat was worth it.
